National Day Brussels Sprouts Mussel Dumplings

With the sweltering weather in Singapore, we’re always more than happy to indulge in icy desserts, particularly local favourite Ice Kachang. If you feel the same, you’ll love this cool new reinvented version from Brussel Sprouts, Ice Kachang Ball ($12) made with Yogurt granite sweetened with Cassonade and topped off with Popcorn and Red Bean Caviar. There are few cultures more iconic than the Peranakan culture when it comes to the Singapore food scene so what better way to celebrate National Day than with some of its most famous dishes? From August 7 to September 7 at Clifford Pier, enjoy famous peranakan delicacies, like Nonya Chicken Curry and Roti Jala, based on the recipes from Mrs Lee Chin Koon, famous for penning the recognised Peranakan cookbook Mrs Lee’s Cookbook and being the mother of ex-prime minister Lee Kuan Yew.

National Day Cafe Brio BBQ Buffet Lunch

Breaded rice balls, to go with your plate of Hainese-style steamed chicken? That’s exactly what you’ll get and more at this festive spread. The Street 50 restaurant at Bay Hotel Singapore also counts chili crab pasta, tiger prawns, braised sea cucumber among its National Day-only dishes, so there’s just as much seafood to dine on at this dinner buffet.

Located at The Fullerton Pavilion, this Spanish restaurant offers one of the best firework views in town come National Day. Opt to watch the fireworks display over drinks, from $28 each, depending on your drink, be it a glass of house pour or the “All I Oli” celebratory cocktail ($49++ with a serving of patatas). Or you can splurge on a meal that includes a festive pandan-flavoured dish; this surprise treat will be made available only for dinner on August 9, 2014.

Crowne Plaza at Changi Airport
While lobster rolls have been all the rage, we won’t say no to more of such crustacean treats. Like the tantalising bowl of Boston Lobster Laksa ($28++), which is prepared with angel hair pasta for an Italian-inspired touch to the dish at the Azur and Lobby Lounge restaurants at the Crowne Plaza at Changi Airport. Other “luxed-up” local favourites include the claypot Hokkien noodles cooked with king crab ($32++), satay marinated Australian Rib Eye ($35++); excuse us for a moment, while we try not to drool at our desks at the thought of these treats.

Cute and oh-so-sweet, Miam Miam’s Singapore-themed souffle pancake is practically Instagram bait, for all the foodies out there. Best of all, it can be absolutely free: Show up wearing a red and white outfit at this restaurant to enjoy a taste of this souffle pancake, complimentary with any main course ordered for diners game enough to wear our national colours. You won’t be able to enjoy this treat unless you do so, for this is one treat that money alone can’t quite buy.

Plaza Brasserie
Chances are, most of us would not have tried traditional dishes like the Cantonese-style braised chicken wings with fermented red bean curd or the Hainanese-style “yi bua” (a snack made of stir-fried coconut, peanuts and sugar); unless you’re lucky enough to have family members who cook these treats for you. For the rest of us, these old-school dishes can still be had, at this National Day spread at Plaza Brasserie for the whole month of August. It’s the right opportunity for you to dine out with family too, who may just remember these savoury treats.

Town Restaurant
Some of us will still prioritise a good, uniquely Singapore-style meal, above all other cuisines; so if that’s the case, why not give this high tea buffet a try, with a chance to dine in comfort while you’re at it. The Town restaurant at The Fullerton Hotel will serve rojak, laksa, mee rebus, kueh pie tee and more celebrated local dishes over its brunch buffet on August 9, from 12pm to 3.30pm. You could take the chance to walk off the meal along the Singapore River too, if you want to wait to see the fireworks later in the evening.
