In the latest edition of “they did what?” in the international gourmet scene, a Chicago-based brewery has introduced a truffle-infused beer.

Priced at no less than US$120 (approximately S$150) per 22-ounce bottle, the Shaved Black Truffle Pilsner by Moody Tongue features an infusion of the said truffle, hand-shaved to create the aromatic infusion added to the beer. This brew for rather refined palates (or foodies with money to burn) is made from Pilsen malt, German hops and black truffle imported from Australia.

While Moody Tongue founder Jared Rouben remains mum on the restaurants that will carry this truffle-infused beer, bottles of the fine brew are said to be heading soon to Chicago and New York; all in all, most probably the top Michelin-starred names that the foodies among us would know. It has already made a brief appearance as part of a truffle-themed dinner at Per Se, the celebrated restaurant in New York’s Columbus Circle.

While you may scoff at the lofty price, you’ve got to give the brewmaster some credit for all the effort that goes into making each bottle. “I spent several all-nighters shaving truffles,” said Rouben to the New York Post. “Imagine separating egg yolks from egg whites by the hundreds.”

Will this very (ahem) refined brew be coming to Singapore anytime soon? For the taste-curious, you’ll just have to wait and see; we’ll keep you posted, should we hear any word of it!
