Pickleball is quietly taking over—and not just in Singapore. The sport has been gaining traction globally, with celebs like Selena Gomez and George Clooney, and even athletes like Michael Phelps, all getting in on the action. But what is pickleball, exactly?

What is pickleball?

While it might seem like the latest trendy sport, pickleball actually dates back to 1965. It was invented on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three friends—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. After coming home one afternoon to find their families bored, they decided to get creative. Armed with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball, they started playing in the backyard. Over the next few weeks, they fine-tuned the game, borrowing elements from badminton and eventually creating a set of rules. The goal? To create a sport that was easy, fun, and something the whole family could enjoy together.

Think of pickleball as a mix between tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It uses paddles (not rackets) and a lightweight plastic ball with holes, and it’s typically played on a court about a third the size of a tennis court.

Pickleball in Singapore

Pickleball first made its way to Singapore in the 1990s, but it was only after the COVID-19 pandemic that the sport truly started to take off. With indoor sports venues shut down, people began turning to outdoor multi-purpose courts—and some discovered pickleball in the process.

Social media and celebrity endorsements also helped push the sport into the spotlight, making it more visible and appealing to a younger crowd.

Today, as more people pick up paddles and try the sport for themselves, businesses are responding by opening up more dedicated spaces to meet the growing demand.
