For most Singaporeans, supper has become somewhat of a pastime, especially when there isn’t much else open after hours. Some of us enjoy sitting by the coffeeshop for a late-night bite after a run, catching up with friends, or even the occasional secret rendezvous (read: Hougang Block “ABC” ). That said, Hougang has found itself in the spotlight recently for reasons beyond its food scene, but if there’s a silver lining, it’s that it’s also put a spotlight on some of the supper spots in the area you may not have explored yet.

So if you’re on the hunt for somewhere new to satisfy those late-night hunger pangs, look no further.

Ahead, we’ve rounded up some of the places to grab supper (and maybe spill a little tea) in Hougang.

  1. 1. $1.50 dim sum Hougang
  2. 2. Tom’s Palette
  3. 3. Sweet Scoop
  4. 4. Al Falah Restaurant Pte Ltd
  5. 5. Charen Thai Kitchen
  6. 6. Tenderbest Makcik Tuckshop

$1.50 dim sum Hougang

$1.50 dim sum in this economy? Yes, please. Tucked within a Kimly coffeeshop that’s open 24 hours, this dim sum spot is known for serving up pretty decent dishes like century egg porridge, siew mai and meat buns. It does have some mixed reviews on Google Maps when it comes to service, but for the price you’re paying, it’s a pretty solid addition to Hougang’s dim sum scene.

Tom’s Palette

Tucked along Hougang Street 21, this ice cream shop serves up a unique range of flavours that’ll have you going back for seconds. One of their most recent collaborations was a bittergourd ice cream, an acquired taste that’s definitely not for everyone, but a fun surprise if you’re feeling adventurous. Of course, they also carry the more classic, sweeter flavours if you’d rather keep things simple, best enjoyed alongside a freshly toasted waffle. It’s open till 1am, so it makes for the perfect sweet spot to cap off your night.

Sweet Scoop

If a cosy hideout away from the buzz is what you’re after, Sweet Scoop is worth checking out. Located along Hougang Avenue 5, customers have raved about their ice cream and waffles, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and topped with a fresh scoop of ice cream, making it the perfect dessert for a warm night out in Singapore after dinner.

The place is closed on Tuesdays, but you can swing by after 3pm on other days for your waffle and ice cream fix. It’s open till 11pm on weekdays, and stays open a little later, till 11.30pm, on Fridays and Saturdays.

Al Falah Restaurant Pte Ltd

Al Falah is the kind of place where you can sit back, relax and enjoy a cup of teh tarik while you slowly work through a plate of prata, whatever the time of day. The place is open throughout the day, so you’ll never have to worry about going hungry. The dishes are pretty straightforward and common, the kind you can find almost anywhere, but if a convenient spot to sit, chat and let time pass with your friends is what you’re after, this one’s worth considering.

Charen Thai Kitchen

Got a big appetite? The portions at Charen Thai Kitchen are pretty generous, and if you’re looking for something that’s bang for your buck, this is a solid option to consider. You can dig into a hot bowl of tom yum soup alongside Thai favourites like basil rice, pineapple fried rice, papaya salad and Thai milk tea. It’s not exactly a supper spot per se, but it closes at 11pm, which is fairly late compared to most other restaurants, so it’s still a solid option if you’re eating on the later side.

Tenderbest Makcik Tuckshop

This is a great place to swing by after a run around Punggol Park. Tenderbest is well known for its chicken dishes, but it also has an extensive menu that’ll leave you spoilt for choice. They also serve a 2-litre Milo Tower that’s great for sharing with a group of friends, along with other options like burgers and pastas.

On top of that, it opens as early as 8.30am and stays open till 11.30pm, so there’s plenty of time to swing by. It also has a small indoor pond with albino turtles and terrapins, a cute little addition that makes the spot even more memorable.
