WHAT IS THE ALKALINE DIET?
It follows the principle that you need to keep your body’s pH between 7.35 and 7.45. To achieve this number, you need to eat mainly alkaline foods. The formula for this diet to work is to eat 80% alkaline foods and 20% acidic foods. The reason why this diet is meant to work is because when you follow a diet high in foods that produce alkaline, this minimises the acid build up in your body. Too much acid leads to problems such as inflammation and weight gain.

WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?
Not only will you lose fat, your memory and energy levels will be improved too, apparently. It is also supposed to have anti-aging benefits, to boost your immune system and relieve aches and pains. In the long run, it is said to help to prevent heart disease, bloating and insomnia.

WHAT TO EAT & WHAT TO AVOID?
Most foods that we eat break down into an either alkaline or acidic base once they have been digested and this is how you choose what foods to eat and avoid under this diet. Alkaline foods include vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts and legumes; acidic foods to avoid include dairy products, alcohol, coffee, tea, sugar, wheat and meat. The aim is to eat alkaline foods 80% of the time, which amounts to five-and-a-half days a week.

SO DOES IT WORK?
From a scientific point of view, the jury is still out on this diet. Those in the know believe that you can’t change your blood’s pH through food; it’s only the pH of your urine that may be affected. The general consensus is that this diet works simply because it encourages you to eat healthy and fresh foods most of the time, which is undoubtedly beneficial to your body and overall health.
