A glittering underwater-themed wedding at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore

Rachel Wee and Ken Chen treated their guests to an unforgettable underwater-themed wedding banquet at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore that saw plenty of shimmery sea-inspired details and the bride making an entrance in a life-sized clam.

How did you meet?

A mutual friend set us up on a date. Ken made a good first impression. We really enjoyed each other’s company and started hanging out a lot more after that.

What was your proposal like?

For the proposal, he surprised me during our trip to Seoul for a friend’s wedding. Dressed in the hanbok, we were taking photos at Gyeongbokgung Palace when he said he had to visit the washroom. Our Korean friend and guide led me to a spot where Ken waiting for me. He said the look on my face was priceless.

Share with us your wedding theme and celebration!

We celebrated with three events over two days: the tea ceremony and lunch on the first day, and the church mass and dinner the next day. We wanted the tea ceremony to be traditional and fun, so we entered my family home in a bridal sedan and our entourage wore Tang dynasty costumes.

The wedding gown I eventually wore – a Rebecca Caroline ballgown I fell in love with as soon as I put it on – was so different from the mermaid I envisioned myself wearing but did not suit my petite frame. The final touch was a stunning cathedral-length veil with Swarovski crystals.

I’ve loved mermaids since watching The Little Mermaid, so when Ken suggested an underwater theme for our dinner, I was ecstatic. Ultimately, we wanted our guests to feel as if they’d been transported to somewhere under the sea, and it was romantic and dreamy.

To keep them entertained, the programme was light-hearted and exciting. We had song and dance performances, and for our march-in, I made a surprise appearance in a life-sized clam instead of walking through the entrance. Another funny highlight: my dad delivering his speech while dressed as King Triton! Everyone cracked up.

We ended with an after-party in the ballroom and our friends said they felt like they were in a “club in the ocean”. It was such a fun night that we didn’t want it to end.

Our only regret was not allocating time for photos with everyone, which would have been such great keepsakes.

Marrying the girl of my dreams was surreal. When I saw Rachel coming down the aisle, I was moved to tears." - Ken
