3D printed wedding dresses might actually be a thing

Couture creations imbued with sci-fi or tech-inspired elements are certainly nothing new, but crafting outfits entirely via 3-D printing? 

This was what Dutch designer Iris van Herpen had in mind when she first debuted a 3D printed dress back in 2011 (talk about forward-thinking). Since then, other brands have jumped on the bandwagon, including Pringle of Scotland, which included 3D-printed elements with its sweaters. 

For Spring 2018 Couture, the designer tapped on technology yet again (3D printed, heat-bonded and laser-cut fabrics were used, as well as mylar, a type of polyester resin used to make heat-resistant plastic films and sheets), sending models down the runway in spectacularly serene creations that we can definitely picture a bride wearing down an aisle.

She titled the collection “Ludi Naturae,” with "Ludi" associated with the word "play" in Latin, and "Naturae", a reference to the natural and manmade landscapes of the world from which she was inspired. The result? Fluid, undulating shapes, billowing layers and delicate structures that exude a futuristic yet otherworldly charm. Some of our favourite bridal-worthy pieces, below:
