Why it might be important for brides in China to hire professional bridesmaids
No, this has nothing to do with not having enough close friends to make up the numbers.

Necessity is the mother of invention. And for some brides in China, the necessity to protect their friends from physical, sexual, and other forms of abuse (and potentially from harm as well), is seeing the rise in professional bridesmaids instead.
This alarming trend stemmed from wedding games that were getting out of hand during the banquet or reception. In fact, one bridesmaid choked to death on her own vomit at a wedding in Wenchang in Hainan, China in September 2016 when she was forced to drink too much alcohol by guests during the party.
While this is an extreme example, being forced to drink heavy spirits or commit ridiculous acts isn't new. Wedding games newlyweds are forced to play, have gotten out of hand, too (see this story for more details).
So really, when you think about it, these brides would be doing their close friends a favour instead, by asking them to sit out of their wedding party.
The situation in Singapore hasn't gotten to that stage yet, but we should seriously consider whether potentially dangerous (not to mention humiliating) gatecrashing games are really necessary when it comes to grooms proving their love for their brides.
Think about it: how far would you go when it comes to gatecrashing games, and when the time comes, would you hire a professional to stand by your side on one of the biggest days of your lives, instead?
