How to look fab in a wedding ballgown if you're a petite bride

Here, five ways for a petite bride (160cm or shorter) to look fab in a grand wedding ballgown.

1. Skip the train

Your skirt’s large enough to give you the formality and grandeur you’ve been seeking. A train will only overwhelm you, and might impede movement if your venue doesn’t have a long aisle for it to stretch behind.

2. Wear heels (and a tall updo or bun!)

This one’s an obvious solution, especially since your gown will cover most of your shoes. If you’re not used to wearing heels, consider wedges or platform shoes that’ll give you a bit more height. Likewise, tie your hair into an updo which will add height. The look will also match the formality and style of your dress. 

3. Wear a gown with a shorter bustier or empire waistline

The trick to making you look taller in your gown is to wear one with a shorter bustier (which gives the illusion of a higher waist and longer legs). If you’re customising yours, or getting a made-to-measure gown, ask the designer to see if she can work around this.

4. Avoid oversized accessories

This applies to your earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and your bouquet. Like the tip above, your dress should be the centre of attention, and anything else, will cause unnecessary distractions.

5. Keep the details to a minimum

While lace embellishments and a little bling is fine, don’t overwhelm your dress (and yourself) with too many details.
