The next time you pick up your remote control instead of a book or even your laptop, think again.

Watching TV can be bad for your health

Among the three activities, watching television is associated with increased levels of substances like cholesterol and triglycerides in the body, a new study has found. This in turn raises the risk of ailments like hypertension, heart disease and high cholesterol.

Researchers also found that reading and computer usage did not affect participants in the same way, saying it was probably because watching TV often leads to poor eating habits.

This was the result of a study by the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health which was conducted from 2004 to 2007. It involved 3,305 Singaporeans of Chinese, Malay and Indian ethnicities, ranging from ages 18 to 70.
