Why Japan is the dream destination for Singapore’s digital nomads
A recent survey has revealed that the country is the top destination for Singaporeans longing to become digital nomads

As Japan unveiled its digital nomad visa earlier this year in March, it sparked a wave of excitement among Singaporeans eager to embrace a lifestyle that marries work with wanderlust.
So it comes as no surprise that the Land of the Rising Sun has quickly emerged as the top destination for Singaporeans longing to become digital nomads, as shown by recent data from YouGov Surveys.
This trend highlights a growing desire for flexible and hybrid work arrangements.
Japan: The new frontier for digital nomads
Imagine sipping matcha in a Kyoto teahouse while finalising a project, or soaking in the neon glow of Tokyo as you brainstorm your next big idea. Japan offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity, making it the perfect backdrop for digital nomads seeking inspiration.
Following closely behind Japan in popularity are Australia, desired by 45% of Singaporeans, and New Zealand, with 43% showing interest. South Korea (41%) and Thailand (40%) are also high on the list for those dreaming of a life less ordinary.
The journey of a digital nomad
For many Singaporeans, the digital nomad lifestyle isn’t just a dream – it’s a reality they’ve already explored. According to YouGov, about 36% have lived this lifestyle at some point, with most opting for shorter adventures. A majority (53%) reported spending less than a month as digital nomads, while 25% embraced it for 1-3 months. A smaller group experienced the freedom for 4-6 months (11%), and another 11% for over half a year.
Leading the pack are professionals in computer and IT fields like coding, programming, and web design, making up 21% of digital nomads. Engineers follow at 19%, with coaches and consultants at 18%. Notably, one in six media and communication professionals (17%) have also journeyed into this world, particularly among Gen Z, who are redefining work-life balance.
The allure of freedom and flexibility
What makes the digital nomad lifestyle so enticing? For many, it’s the flexibility to work from anywhere (57%) and the chance to explore the world without using vacation days (56%). Escaping routine and finding fresh perspectives are also key motivators for 52% of digital nomads. Beyond the travel perks, this lifestyle allows for meeting like-minded individuals (34%), reducing burnout (33%), and testing new locations for potential future moves (33%).
Navigating the challenges
However, this idyllic lifestyle isn’t without its hurdles. Nearly half of digital nomads (48%) find it challenging to communicate with colleagues across time zones. The longing for family and friends (44%) and the complexity of travel logistics (37%) add to the list of challenges. Maintaining a routine while constantly on the move proves difficult for 34% of digital nomads.
Dreams and realities
For those yet to embark on their digital nomad journey, the appeal is undeniable. A striking 69% are drawn to the idea of traveling without taking time off work, while 67% yearn for flexible work arrangements and 58% crave an escape from monotony. Yet, these aspiring nomads often view the lifestyle’s challenges more dauntingly than those who have lived it, underscoring the gap between dream and reality.
Japan’s introduction of the digital nomad visa has opened new doors for those seeking to merge professional ambitions with a passion for travel. For Singaporeans ready to redefine their work-life balance, the world is not just an oyster – it’s a playground waiting to be explored, one country at a time.
