We have come to the end of another gruelling year and I can think of no better reward than to treat yourself and the important people in your life to a fabulous staycation. Jetting off to a hectic overseas trip and trying to squeeze 10 attractions into one itinerary sounds awfully stressful compared to a full day (or a few days!) of soft white sheets, unreasonably long bathtub soaks and delicious breakfast buffets, right here in Singapore.

The herworldPLUS team has shortlisted the best hotels for an end-of-year staycation. You can thank us after your luxuriously local vacay!

1. Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore

Being situated just above Orchardgateway, you may have come across this hotel while shopping at Orchard 313. Keep in mind that Hotel Jen’s lobby is on the 10th floor, so don’t go asking the poor concierge on the first floor for a check-in like I did! There are actually two Hotel Jen properties in Singapore – the Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore (where I stayed) and Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore that’s at 1A Cuscaden Road – so don’t get them confused.

Being Club Room guests, we were immediately whisked away to the club lounge for a private check-in. The Club Lounge is a peacefully secluded area offering iMac usage, a panoramic view of the city and refreshments like tea and macarons.

The first thing about the Club Room that caught my attention were the tall windows overlooking the city, which come complete with window seats. Naturally, my girlfriends and I rushed over to snap some selfies and pictures of the view (a girl’s gotta put good natural lighting to good use, y’know).

After settling in, we wasted no time in zeroing in on Hotel Jen’s most Insta-worthy feature: The rooftop infinity pool. We weren’t the only ones; the pool area was so crowded that we couldn’t even find one empty seat to place our valuables on. I recommend coming at night after the crowds are gone for a relaxing swim and a magnificent view of the city lights.

As for the rooms, we enjoyed it even though it was rather bare; don’t expect amenities like a state-of-the-art coffee machine or a swanky claw-footed bathtub. I feel this staycation would appeal most to those wanting a short city getaway or girlfriends who want to indulge in nearby shopping sprees.

2. New Majestic Hotel
Located on the quiet Bukit Pasoh Road, it took me about 45 minutes of wandering around before I could find the boutique hotel (I’m directionally challenged, a normal person will have an easier time than me, for sure). The long search was worth it as I was greeted by the hotel’s pristine lobby, which comes complete with an impressive winding staircase that leads up to an outdoor pool and gym.

Just like the famous Wanderlust Hotel, no two rooms at the New Majestic hotel are the same. The hotel has collaborated with nine Singaporean designers to make every room in the 35-room hotel unique. Each room has a completely different vibe to it, so take a look at their website for the full list of rooms to see which one catches your liking.

To be frank, I was a little disappointed when I first heard the Lifestyle Rooms I requested for (Mirrors and Fluid) were already booked, and that I was given the Untitled Lifestyle Room. However, all that changed as soon as I lay eyes on Untitled. There was a bathtub in the middle of the room. A great bloomin’ bathtub! I was sold.

Amazing bathtub aside, Untitled also has other very lovable features: Clean white walls, a giant bed with furry pillows, a balcony and even a smartphone for guests to use during their stay. The hotel also stocks Kiehl’s products as shower amenities, a thoughtful touch that should impress the beauty buffs out there.

A word of caution, though: the hotel is super strict about the number of occupants per room, so forget about throwing the massive house party you could never throw at home here. Also, remember to request for your preferred room before they’re all booked up!

3. Lloyd’s Inn
Oh, this beauty. I’m sure you’ve already seen snapshots of this boutique hotel on your Instagram feed, because it’s virtually impossible to visit this hotel without whipping out your camera and capturing it in all its clean, minimalist glory.

My first impression of the hotel was that it was most Kinfolk-like, and lo and behold, they have a whole collection of Kinfolk magazines for guests to flip through whilst waiting to check in. If that’s where they’ve got their aesthetic inspiration from, they’re doing it right.

The friendly receptionist led us to The Skyroom, which gives off an elegant, rainforest-like feel. The room comes with an airwell for superb natural lighting, a rainforest shower and most importantly, an outdoor bathtub. Yes, you can tell that I have an extremely soft spot for bathtubs.

After having a great night’s sleep on The Skyroom’s soft bed and a morning swim at the hotel’s heated dipping pools (no unpleasant shudders of cold, yay!), I concluded my splendid stay. My only complaint is in the breakfast department; Lloyd’s Inn should strive to provide their guests breakfast at the hotel instead of giving them coupons to use at the Killiney coffee shop down the road, which was so crowded we had to wait half an hour for our coffee and toast.

4. Adonis Hotel
This hidden gem on Purvis Street looks unassuming from the outside, but it has 19 beautiful rooms that are perfect for a weekend getaway with a significant other. The hotel also boasts an impressive collection of in-room amenities like Adonis shower products, a refillable mini fridge and a Nespresso coffee machine.

You’ll be happy to know that the hotel offers a daily Happy Hour to their guests; and no, it’s not like the regular ones where they only serve you beer and cocktails. Adonis Hotel does just that, along with other drinks such as liquors and even wine. All drinks (except wine, which is limited to a generous four glasses per room) are free-flow.

I only had a fruity cocktail because I was staying there with my family, but I plan to have a very happy Happy Hour on my next visit. I mean, how many hotels are there in Singapore that serve free-flow alcohol? That is one foolproof way to win over the drinkers.

Apart from the lovely rooms and generous “freebies”, what really makes Adonis Hotel an unforgettable experience for me was their level of service. There seems to be a sense of pride and service instilled in every staff member we encountered, from the lady who gave us a room tour to the waiters who served us dinner.

I would say that courteous staff are a basic requirement at every hotel, but the staff at Adonis go beyond that by making their guests feel genuinely welcome at their hotel. Now I feel like every other hotel in Singapore needs to step up their service game.

5. The Scarlet
Ever wanted to live lavishly with no financial concerns at all? Of course we all do, and the Scarlet Hotel is where you can have a taste of that high life. Being one of the first boutique hotels to be constructed in Singapore, the place oozes old-school luxury. As one can tell from the marble bathtubs to the velvet headboards, no expense was spared to make each room look like it came straight out of a billionaire’s tastefully-designed mansion.

The clean and white minimalist trend hasn’t caught on at The Scarlet Hotel, which proudly parades vibrant colour schemes on every floor. One may get lost in the hotel’s many winding hallways, but a quick check with the efficient staff will get you to where you want to be.

Although I didn’t get to stay at any of the wonderful suites, I did go on a tour of them and by golly, are they fabulous. Walking through the suites’ doors immediately transported me into another world. This is where I would imagine a royal king or queen would live. The Opulent suite in particular impressed me the most, and is the one place in Singapore I would choose to have my honeymoon at.

6. The Club Hotel

“The Club was revamped late last year and its new design has lots of subtly luxe touches that make for a special experience if you’re in need of some TLC. From the deliciously lavender-scented, organic, Bamford bath products to the fluffy bedroom slippers (I’ll confess to taking my pair home) and handmade, Queen Elizabeth II-approved bed, it’s the little touches that make this understated hotel great for a retreat from the daily grind. The 20-room boutique nook prides itself on an old-school philosophy which adds a personal element to everything from the in-room check-in and guided tour to their option to request late check-out if you want a few extra hours in bed! As long as there is availability, they will be happy to oblige.

Another major plus point are the four dining and drinking options on the premises, I love the underground whisky joint for a sexy speak-easy vibe where you can kickback and escape the usual crowded bars. The rooftop Peruvian restaurant I recommend only for those who can stomach their spice, but the view is stunning for drinks with a view. For a more traditional dinner, head downstairs to The Disgruntled Chef. The two higher-priced suites come with a balcony overlooking Ann Siang Road and his ‘n’ hers sinks for those looking to achieve serious #couplegoals. If you’re a coffee-loving bookworms they have a complimentary Nespresso machine in every room and stacks of books to while away the time with on their terrace reserved for that very purpose. The proximity to Ann Siang’s nightlife and independent shops makes for a fun wander if you do decide to leave your room too!” – Jennifer McGeever, fashion writer
