Ask the Expert: Can travel actually add years to your life?
That post-holiday glow might be doing more for your body than you think, but only if you’re travelling the right way

We’ve all clung to the idea that a good holiday is “good for the soul”. But the real question is: Does it actually translate to a longer life? I get this question a lot in my practice. As Chief Dietitian at Eternami, here’s what the research really says.
Does travel actually extend your lifespan?
If we look strictly at gold-standard randomised controlled trials, the research is thin. You can’t lock 500 people in a resort and 500 people in an office for forty years to see who dies first. However, if you look at epidemiological proxies for longevity, the evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of travel extending life.
The most famous data point comes from the landmark Framingham Heart Study, which tracked workers over 20 years. It revealed that women who took a vacation once every six years or less were almost eight times more likely to develop coronary heart disease or suffer a heart attack than those who took at least two vacations a year. Modern biological age tracking also shows us that the psychological down-regulation of cortisol achieved during a genuine break actively protects telomere length. So while travel isn’t a direct medicine, the physiological state it induces is a documented life-extender.
It’s not just about travel, it’s how you travel
In longevity science, I view travel not as a baseline intervention, but as an amplifier. If your baseline at home is high stress, hyper-processed foods, and poor sleep, and you carry those exact habits onto a red-eye flight to spend four days on a frantic, densely packed itinerary eating airport food, travel acts as a biological tax. Conversely, if you use travel to down-shift your nervous system, increase your daily step count, and expose yourself to novel, whole-food diets, it acts as a biological deposit.
What travel actually does to your body
They all exact a toll, but they don’t hold equal weight. Pressurised cabins sit at roughly 6,000 to 8,000 feet of equivalent altitude, which slightly lowers the oxygen in your blood and creates mild oxidative stress, while the low humidity saps your body of water. Then there’s what I call “Traveller’s Gut” – crossing time zones disrupts the circadian rhythm of your gut microbiome, temporarily lowering your mucosal immune defences right as you’re introducing unfamiliar foreign bacteria.
But the undisputed heavyweight champion of travel damage is circadian misalignment, otherwise known as jet lag. Your master clock governs the expression of thousands of genes related to DNA repair, insulin sensitivity, and hormone production. When you throw that clock off by six hours, your body enters a state of temporary, low-grade metabolic syndrome.
Does frequent work travel take a toll over time?
Yes, and in longevity medicine, I call this allostatic load, which is the wear and tear on the body caused by chronic, low-grade, repeated stress. A 30-year-old executive may bounce back from a 14-hour flight to London in two days. But what they fail to measure is the sub-clinical accumulation of visceral fat, the creeping upward trend of their fasting blood glucose, and the slow stiffening of their arterial walls caused by the next 15 years of fragmented deep sleep and transit-induced inflammation.
How travel supports a longer life
It’s a masterpiece of a biological chain reaction, driven primarily by positive hormesis — the concept that a small, manageable dose of stress makes an organism stronger — and neuroplasticity. When you force your brain to navigate the Tokyo subway system or order a coffee in broken Italian, you spark neurogenesis: the creation of new neural pathways, which builds cognitive reserve against dementia. Simultaneously, the sheer novelty of a new environment forces the brain out of its default mode network, the autopilot state we fall into at home.
Travel is also, in my view, the ultimate behavioural Trojan Horse. Strictly speaking, your biology doesn’t know you’re in Kyoto; it just knows that today you walked 18,000 steps, ate five different types of fermented vegetables, sat in the sunshine for three hours, and didn’t look at a spreadsheet. Our daily environment is covered in behavioural “Velcro” that traps us in our routines. Travel breaks the friction of changing our behaviour.
When does a trip stop being restorative?
The tipping point is dictated almost entirely by the pace-to-duration ratio. If you have a 7-day trip and attempt to visit four cities, your body remains in sympathetic drive the entire time — you are simply doing your stressful day job, but in a different timezone with a heavier suitcase. A restorative trip requires a de-escalation phase. It usually takes the human nervous system 48 to 72 hours just to realise it’s safe to put the armour down. If your trip ends on day five, you’ve forced your body to pack up right at the exact hour its deep-rest protocols were about to switch on.
Three habits to make travel work for your longevity
Stay hydrated and get some sunlight. Hydrate the moment you land, and get 15 to 20 minutes of natural sunlight directly into your retinas. Light is the master switch that tells your central clock you’ve arrived in a new world.
Prioritise your first meal. Make the very first meal you eat at your destination the highest-fibre, most plant-diverse meal of the trip, like a salad, a rich vegetable stew, or a fermented dish. You need to immediately feed your gut microbiota and send a signal of abundance to your GI tract to counteract transit-induced gut permeability.
Polyphenol pre-load. Twenty-four hours before a long-haul flight, swap your standard morning coffee for a high-grade matcha, and consume a heavy dose of deep-purple or bitter plant foods — wild blueberries, dark pomegranate juice, or raw broccoli sprouts. Flying exposes you to low-dose cosmic ionising radiation that generates a spike in reactive oxygen species, which can cause single-strand DNA breaks. You can’t detox radiation after you land, but you can pre-emptively arm your cells.
Don’t fall for the offset myth
That said, none of this means a long trip can cure you for the rest of the year. The “Offset Myth” is a dangerous delusion. A 10-day wellness retreat in Bali can’t pay off 355 days of chronic sleep deprivation, a sedentary desk life, and a high-cortisol existence. You can’t use travel as a “get out of jail free” card for abusing your biology the rest of the year. The best version of travel isn’t an escape from a life you hate, but it’s an annual calibration of a life you’ve built to sustain you.
