Music festivals not to miss in 2013

Big Day Out
January 18-28
Australia, various venues

Held over five dates in five separate venues in Australia (Sydney January 18, Gold Coast January 20, Adelaide January 25, Melbourne January 26 and Perth January 28), the Big Day Out Festival is one of Australia’s leading live music events. Each date of the Big Day Out Festival features near identical line-ups. 2013 headliners include The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Tickets to the events are largely sold out and begin at around 165 Australian dollars.

St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival 2013
January 26-February 9
Singapore, New Zealand and Australia

First held in 2004, in Melbourne, this Australian indie music festival now includes a total of seven cities; our sunny island city included. Back in Singapore on January 26, get to catch 14 acts including Gotye, Kings of Convenience, Of Monsters and Men at Gardens by the Bay at the 2013 Singapore St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival. It’s a mega list of 14 acts and that one music festival that all indie music fans won’t want to miss.

Big Night Out Asia 2013

Now in its fourth year, Big Night Out 2013 will return on January 30 in Singapore with headliners Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend and Band of Horses performing live at Fort Canning Park. Future Music Festival
March 2-11

The Australian Future Music Festival takes in Brisbane (March 2), Perth (March 3), Sydney (March 9), Melbourne (March 10) and Adelaide (March 11). The line-up includes The Stone Roses, The Prodigy, PSY and Dizzee Rascal among many others. Tickets start at around 149 Australian dollars.

SXSW

Austin, Texas, USA

South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual music (March 12-17) and film conference and festival (March 8-16) held in Austin, Texas. The music lineup in 2013 includes Alt-J, Atlas Genius, Of Mice and Men, Pacific Air and many, many others.

Future Music Festival Asia

Closer to home, be sure to get your tickets for this festival if you’re a dance/ trance music fan. The 2013 edition of Future Music Festival Asia will include Dutch superstar DJ Van Buuren.

Winter Music Conference

Miami, Florida

This premier electronic music event features 2,000 artists and DJs every year with numerous events such as club parties and workshops. The event also attracts industry representatives from around the world for a DJ Spin-off, Record Collectors Show and International Dance Music Awards.

Lollapalooza Brazil

Annual alternative music festival Lollapalooza was incarnated in Brazil in 2012 and now heads into its second year. 2013’s lineup includes Pearl Jam, The Killers and The Black Keys among others; Lollapalooze Chile will also feature a similar line-up from April 6 to 7 in 2013.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

April 12-14, April 19-21
Indio, California, USA

Held over two weekends in the California desert, the annual Coachella Festival is renowned for featuring performances from some of the hottest musical acts around. The lineup has not yet been confirmed but acts rumored to play include everyone from Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds to Tegan And Sara and The Stones Roses. Tickets cost around $349.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
April 26-May 5
Louisiana, USA

The New Orleans jazz fest attracts thousands of musicians, playing across 12 stages, spanning genres from blues to R&B and African to Latin. Artists have included Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour to Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Connick Jr. and B.B. King. Single day tickets are priced at $45.

Bonnaroo Festival

The annual Isle of Wight Festival off England’s south coast is one of the leading events on the British summer festival calendar. The 2013 lineup features the recently reformed Stone Roses, American rocker Bon Jovi, the young critically acclaimed Jake Bugg and Bloc Party.

Glastonbury

After a year off, the world-renowned music festival that is Glastonbury returns. 2013’s lineup has not yet been confirmed but it is widely rumored that veteran rockers The Rolling Stones are set to make an appearance. Tickets to the festival are already completely sold out.

Roskilde Festival

Roskilde, Denmark

The 2013 lineup at Roskilde, one of Europe’s biggest festivals, includes C2C, Sigur Ross and Queens of the Stone Age. Tickets cost around DKK 1,810 (€242) for camping and access to events for the entire week.

Werchter, Belgium

Rock Werchter, one of Europe’s biggest festivals, attracts over 100,000 visitors. The lineup is set to include Green Day, Blur and the Editors.

Salzburg Festival

The Reading/Leeds Festivals

Reading and Leeds, UK

The Reading and Leeds festivals are a pair of annual festivals which occur simultaneously, with the lineup rotating between each of the festivals on a day-by-day basis. Early announcements for the 2013 festival confirm that the Deftones, Alt-J and Subfocus will be among the artists playing.

Burning Man Festival
August 26- September 2
Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA

The annual Burning Man arts and music festival held in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada is a weeklong event dedicated to the ideas of community, self-expression and self-reliance. The event attracts lots of artists but is notably different from other festivals thanks to the lack of big name artists playing large stages. Ticket information for 2013 is not yet available.
