Where else can you dance through the night as you gaze up at the starlit sky, or frolic with other music lovers amidst Mother Nature if not at an outdoor music festival? Enhancing the entire concert-going experience, these rain-or-shine gigs should appear on everyone’s to-do list at least once in your lifetime.
And with Zoukout to look forward to this weekend (starting tonight), we take a look at five of the hottest, most anticipated outdoor music events around the world. Are you ready to get your dance on?
It’s been said that trying to explain what this radical week-long arts and music festival to someone who’s never been there is an insurmountable task — you just have to experience it for yourself. While the event has been dubbed “a freakshow for hippies” by critics since it started gaining popularity in the nineties, we love how freely the attendees express themselves and how the installations are a psychedelic feast for your senses. Nothing is sexier than being entire comfortable in your own skin — or an outrageous outfit — and the people in this beautifully shot video filmed at last year’s Burning Man show you just what embracing yourself looks like.
There’s something for everyone at this festival that features many genres of music from rock and indie to hip hop and electro, as well as large sculptural art. This is where the musically fashionable come together, and where you can go star-gazing even in the day as celebrities such as Katy Perry, Dita von Teese, Alexander Skasgard, Kirsten Stewart, Robert Pattinson and many others are a common sight at Coachella. A music festival where fashionistas come out to play, don’t forget your Jackie O shades and high-waisted vintage shorts if you’re planning to catch next year’s gig. Nothing gets us more excited than a rocking indie outfit that allows for plenty of dancing.
Getting it’s name from when the first concert was held at the base of Mount Fuji in 1997, think of this three-day event as a sort of Asian Glastonbury. Boasting seven main stages and several minor ones and food stalls in between, concert-goers can choose to trek along the beautiful hilly trails, clear gushing rivers or take the Dragondola — the longest gondola lift in the world — to get from one area to another. There’s something so sexy about being completely immersed in nature, and the Fuji Rock Festival definitely gets our vote for most picturesque outdoor music festival venue.
For five days the Pilton farm plays host to a myriad of visitors who make the trip down to this English village for a weekend of nearly every genre of music imaginable on over 50 stages. Performing arts with cabaret, theatre, circus, children’s entertainment, poetry and more also add to the vibrant and colourful atmosphere of this iconic festival which most recently saw U2, Coldplay and Beyonce headline last year’s party. Glastonbury can get rather muddy though, which adds to the whole experience. After all, who wouldn’t want to go dirty dancing — literally — with their favourite stars.
So you’ve got music festivals in deserts, valleys and in country clubs; but Zoukout takes the party to the beach. As one of Asia’s biggest music and dance festivals, you know it’s a show not to be missed when travellers in the region make it a point to stop by for the annual dance party on Siloso Beach. Speaking of beaches, did someone say topless hunks galore? We think has got to be Singapore’s sexiest event with the audience getting wet and wild clad only in bikinis or beach shorts. Look out for acts like DJs Calvin Harris and Paul van Dyk this weekend, and be prepared for serious dance action.
