Let’s face it: Twitter has not been the same since Elon Musk took over. The billionaire bought over the app last year and has since introduced a slew of controversial changes, including asking users to pay for a verified checkmark on the platform and only allowing logged-in Twitter users to view tweets.

Just last week, Twitter introduced another contentious change: unverified accounts – meaning users who do not pay to use the platform – are restricted to only viewing 600 tweets a day, later upped to 1,000.

In response to the growing exodus of users from Elon Musk's Twitter, Meta has made a timely announcement with the launch of their new app, Threads.

Dubbed Meta’s answer to Twitter, the “text-based conversation” app is said to be a platform “where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow.”

Promotional text for the app highlights features such as the ability to follow and directly connect with favourite creators and like-minded individuals, or even establish a dedicated following to share personal ideas, opinions, and creative works with the world.

Interestingly, the choice of the name "Threads" for this new Twitter rival holds significance. Meta initially launched an app with the same name in 2019, as a direct competitor to Snapchat. Although that particular product was eventually abandoned, Meta decided to retain the branding.

Based on the current preview screenshots available, it seems that users will be able to conveniently log into Threads using their existing Instagram handle and seamlessly follow their contacts from the platform. The app's user interface bears resemblance to Twitter, with familiar features such as reposting, liking, and the option to control who can reply to posts.

The Threads app made an early appearance on the Apple app store on Tuesday, generating anticipation for its upcoming release.

Globally, Threads is set to debut either on July 6 or 7, depending on where you’re located. In Singapore, a quick search within the app store revealed that the app is set to launch on July 6.

With Threads set to debut, users disillusioned with the current state of Twitter will have a fresh opportunity to engage, connect, and express themselves within this new social platform offered by Meta.
