It was the lightest knife in the line-up but still felt stable and comfortable. A slight sawing motion got the serrated blade through food. It was a breeze to slice and dice with it, although it sliced oranges best, needing barely any pressure to cut through them.
VERDICT: 8.5/10. Well designed, particularly good for fruit with thick skins.
GIESSER MESSER PRIMELINE CHEF UTILITY KNIFE

The textured, rubberised handle was sturdy but slightly sticky when wet.The stickiness didn’t bother
me, but the protruding heel of the handle made it hard to cut smaller items. It was tricky to dice carrots, onions and garlic as the joint between the handle and blade got in the way. It also wobbled slightly when halving oranges.
VERDICT: 6.5. An average knife – it was let down by its poor handle design.
GLOBAL GSF-22 11CM UTILITY KNIFE
$79, from Tangs Orchard
It’s the only knife with a seamless stainless steel handle so food never gets trapped in the joint.The round perforations make it slip-proof. It was the most versatile, making clean, precise cuts in carrots, onions, garlic, apples and oranges.
VERDICT: 9/10. An impressive, efficient and razor-sharp all-rounder worth every cent.
WMF UTILITY KNIFE GRAND CLASS
$129, from Tangs Orchard
This knife is the heaviest in the line-up, but the curved handle fitted my hand snugly. I liked that the finger guard didn’t cut into my thumb and finger. I had to apply more force when I was slicing carrots and halving onions and oranges, but it cut other foods cleanly.
VERDICT: 7/10. Cuts smaller, softer items well.
ATLANTIC CHEF PRECISION 13CM UTILITY KNIFE
$20.60, from Tott
The rubberised handle was slim but my index finger felt awkward on the finger guard. It cut almost as well as the Global knife – it was easy to control and glided through food cleanly, with nary a wobble.
VERDICT: 8/10. An excellent knife that’s versatile and great value for money.
