Apple announced the details of their new phones, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone Pro Max earlier today. Here’s everything you need to know, including prices and specs.

This marks the first iPhone models with 5G, which promises faster download and upload speeds, high quality video streaming, FaceTime in high definition and more. The iPhone 12 models are said to offer the broadest 5G coverage worldwide.

Worried that all that intensive streaming will shorten your battery life? Turn on the Smart Data mode, which “extends battery life by accessing 5G needs and balancing data usage”.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro measure at 6.1 inches, while the iPhone 12 mini comes in at 5.4 inches. The latter is said to be the smallest, thinnest and lightest 5G smartphone at the time of release.

If you prefer bigger phones, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch display.

All the new iPhone 12 models, including the Pro, uses Super Retina® XDR display, which basically means a brighter screen and better display. It promises a more immersive experience, which we reckon would be great for those who play games or use AR apps.

It also comes with an A14 bionic chip, making it more efficient than ever.

The new iPhone models feature iOS 14 (launched in September), which allows you to customise the Home Screen and its widgets, so you can get all the information you need at a glance.

Durability

One of the key differences of the iPhone 12 iterations is that all the variations come with Ceramic Shield front cover, which makes them more durable than their predecessors.

The Ceramic Shield front cover is described as going “beyond glass by adding a new high temperature crystallisation step that grows nano-ceramic crystals within the glass matrix, increases drop performance by 4x”. In other words, it’s supposed to be very durable.

This is complemented with the respective phone's durable finishes: The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini come with aluminium finish, while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max come with stainless steel finish.

And like most of its predecessors, it is dust-, splash- and water-resistant.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini has a dual-camera system, which includes the Ultra Wide camera and a new Wide camera capture important moments. The latter has an aperture of ƒ/1.6, the fastest yet on iPhone, which means you can now capture better quality images and videos in low-light conditions.

These models also come with Night mode, which shouldn't be foreign to you if you’ve used iPhone 11. It also offers faster-performing Deep Fusion for less noise in your photos. If you love shooting videos on your phone, you’ll be happy to know that the iPhone 12 features the first camera to shoot HDR video with Dolby Vision so you can shoot and share cinema-grade videos on your phone.

Want something more pro? The iPhone 12 Pro models features the new Apple ProRAW (coming later in 2020), which allows you to shoot with the versatility of a RAW format. Any photographer would know how important shooting in RAW is to allow for full control over the detais.

The iPhone 12 Pro models feature similar cameras as the iPhone 12 models, but with the inclusion of a 52mm focal length telephoto camera (the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 65mm focal length telephoto camera).

No Earpods, no charger

As part of Apple’s efforts to cut down on carbon emissions and avoiding the mining and use of precious materials, the brand has decided to remove the power adapter and Earpods from the packaging.

Instead, they’re introducing MagSafe, a wireless charging method that is more efficient, but this is sold separately. If you’re an existing iPhone users, don’t be too alarmed by these changes – you can still use your current Earpods and charger with the lightning connector.
