Gorilla Mobile is a new telecommunications startup in town and it brings with it a unique feature. Known as Switchback, the function allows users to ‘switch back’ unused mobile data into digital tokens that can be used to offset bills, as travel roaming data or to make international calls. The conversion of unused data into tokens is done via blockchain technology.

That’s not all: the tokens can also be shared with friends or families even if they aren’t subscribers.

“Companies are once again turning to work-from-home arrangements under the recent tightened Covid-19 measures. Our workforce, now relying on their home Wi-Fi most of the day, has large amounts of unused mobile data each month. Gorilla Mobile’s suite of services, especially our local plan, are developed with the needs of Singapore’s working professionals at heart,” said Xanne Leo, the founder and chief executive officer of Gorilla Mobile. The company is targeting PMETs and local, regional and global businesses.

The company’s pre-launch starts today and ends on August 18, and during this period new customers will be entitled to a Bill Difference Reward of up to SG$50 per mobile number, which will be credited to their PayNow account. However, only one plan is available as of now: the Switch25 mobile plan that costs S$25 and includes 20 GB of local mobile data, 100 minutes of call time and 100 SMSes.

Gorilla Mobile will be relying on M1 as its host Mobile Network Operator. In line with the launch, the company is also rolling out its #RethinkMobile pre-launch campaign on its website, which encourages Singaporeans to look at their mobile phone bills and examine what they are paying for versus what they actually use.
