There’s nothing stopping us from celebrating the power and strength of women every day; in fact, we should. But when March 8 is dedicated to International Women’s Day (IWD) every year, that makes the whole month of March much more exciting, with plenty of opportunities to engage in women-empowering events that uplift and remind us about the limitless potential we all have.

This year’s IWD campaign theme is: #ChooseToChallenge. It’s the nudge we need to be conscious about and call out the gender biases and inequality happening around us, so as to forge a more gender-equal world for ourselves and future generations.

Of course, IWD is also a day month to celebrate women’s achievements. We’re all for toasting to female wins, big or small – and we must say, homegrown shopping mecca BHG Singapore has got us incredibly excited with their lineup of events this March – led by inspiring women from different walks of life.

March 5: Styling workshop by Esther Choy

You should have tried or at least seen the timeless, stylish and functional designs from BHG’s in-house brands Societe, Otana Mode and SBT. Now, meet the designer of those clothes: 28-year-old Esther Choy.

A Laselle graduate, Esther is invested in designing stylish yet functional womenswear, after helping out with a menswear line during an internship with British designer Ada Zanditon. “A lot of appreciation for menswear detailing or functions is lost in womenswear, like adjustable waistband or pockets,” she noted in an interview with The Straits Times.

In August 2020, her positive energy and creative vision led her to be BHG’s first-ever in-house designer.

During the workshop on March 5, Esther will introduce you to the three in-house brands at BHG: Societe, created for the modern office woman, Otona Mode, a Japanese-inspired line of oversized fits and natural fabrics, and SBT, a colourful and youthful collection meant for casual-chic weekend wear.

The workshop is also a great opportunity to get styling tips and recommendations from Esther. After the session, participants are entitled to collect a Societe handbag each. Plus, receive $5 vouchers for same-day redemption for apparel, shoes and handbags from all three brands (applicable for both regular-priced and sales items).

Date/time: March 5, 5pm to 6pm (session 1), or 6pm to 7pm (session 2)

Cost: Free

Venue: BHG Bugis

Music accomplishments aside, what you may not know is that Daphne battled ovarian cancer and a slew of health issues about 10 years ago. She has opened up about it by sharing her experiences with the media.

Panel discussion speaker #3: Nuraliza Osman, lawyer

In Singapore, she serves on the Board of Directors of Make-A-Wish Singapore, a children’s charity organisation that grants the wishes of critically ill children.

In 2018, she was nominated by the Government Investment Corporation of Singapore as part of a group of inspiring women who have overcome challenges and contributed to their causes and communities. In 2019, she hosted a women’s talk show with a panel of four women to raise issues and empower women in the Malay Muslim community in Singapore.
