For early adopters, it’s well worth the price tag. We check out one of the more affordable ones:
Think 3D: The Philips 9000 LED series 40-inch TV.
The Philips 9000 LED series 40-inch TV is like a regular TV but connect the 3-D Upgrade Kit ($499), which includes two pairs of 3-D glasses and a wireless transmitter, and you’re transported into a 3-D world.
The glasses come with three nose bridges for the best fit; additional glasses cost $199 per pair. The TV also has two USB ports and an SD card slot so you can watch internet videos or turn the TV into a mammoth digital photo frame.
The 3-D effect was absolutely realistic, even when viewed from the side. We instinctively held up our hands to catch the guinea pigs that hurtled towards us in G-Force (2009). And we could almost touch the shark swimming across the ocean. The scenes in Alice in Wonderland (2010) were magical. Images were crisp and clear and the colours, rich and saturated. Contrast was excellent, even in a well-lit room.
The large 3-D glasses felt slightly heavy after an hour, but were not terribly uncomfortable, even over spectacles. The ideal distance to watch 3-D movies is about 1.5 metres from the TV.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER
The availability of 3-D content. The technology is still very new and there’s no 3-D content on TV yet. Even 3-D movies for rent or sale are limited.
At video store Gramophone, there were less than five titles for sale, like Clash of the Titans (2010), Despicable Me (2010) and two Harry Potter films, from $59.95 to $95.95 each. At the DVD rental store Video Ezy, there were two titles, and Avatar (2009) in 3-D is only coming in at a later date. Or you can go to Amazon.com, which sells a larger range of 3-D movies, mostly animated features.
VERDICT: If you’re in the market for a new TV and confident that 3-D is the next big thing, this one — with its superb picture quality — is a worthy investment.
