Pop Mart’s Labubu is getting a movie
With a live-action CGI film in the works, the cult-favourite character could be staging its biggest comeback yet

After being in the spotlight for the past few years, it seems like Pop Mart’s famed character, Labubu from The Monsters series, is taking a backseat. But while our focus has shifted to other characters like Twinkle Twinkle and SkullPanda, the Labubu craze could be set for a revival thanks to its upcoming film. Teaming up with Sony Pictures Entertainment, the folks at Pop Mart are looking to bring the hype back to a cinema near you.
This strategic move marks a big step for the Chinese firm as it expands one of its best-known characters beyond collectible charms and into other entertainment avenues and products.
The film will involve BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Paul King, known for works like Paddington, Paddington 2 and Wonka, who will be directing and producing the project. Working alongside him is Kasing Lung, the Hong Kong-born artist who created Labubu, who will serve as executive producer. On top of that, Steven Levenson—who previously worked on Dear Evan Hansen—will co-write the film.
At the moment, no release date has been announced. The project is still in its early development stages and is expected to be a mix of live-action and CGI.
This move shows that Pop Mart is looking to grow Labubu beyond just toys, using film and storytelling to build it into a long-term franchise. The brand has already started expanding in other ways too, including opening a theme park in Beijing and launching a jewellery line with pendants and rings featuring its popular characters.
The Labubu craze has surged over the years and remains one of Pop Mart’s most successful character lines. However, interest has dipped recently, largely due to the company increasing supply—reducing the “artificial scarcity” that once fuelled the initial frenzy.
That said, whether you’re a longtime fan or simply curious about what the film will look like, stay tuned—we’ll bring you more updates as details are released.
