Sweet dreams

1/8

Nothing can match the feeling we get when we fall into a fluffy hotel bed. It's really all part of the holiday experience: The heavy sumptuous comforters, an infinite surfeit of velvety gossamer pillows, and the pristine sheets.

One thing's for sure; the beds at hotels and resorts are so much better than the ones we have back at home.

But instead of investing tons of time and money trying to recreate the sense of bliss and rapture you get when you awaken in a five-star hotel, heed these tips instead for a cost effective guide to remodel after that de luxe bed you still can't stop dreaming about.

Pick sheets with the highest thread count

2/8

The higher the thread count, the softer the sheet. 5-star hotels like Westin usually use sheets with a three-hundred thread count.

If you'd like the same cozy effect you'd get from hotels, don't be afraid to splurge a little on softer sheets - it's an investment really, if you think about all the sweet, sweet rest you'll be getting.

Don’t get fitted sheets

3/8

Many hotels use an oversized flat sheet in place of a fitted one with an elastic band that tucks underneath the bed.

These hotels use two flat sheets; the bottom one is usually tightly tucked around the mattress while the top flat sheet is tucked in on the sides and foot of the bed with the top folded over. This gives you the smoothest sleeping surface possible to lull you into dreamland.

Use a down comforter with a cotton duvet

4/8

Here's one of the many secrets to a perfect hotel-night's sleep: an extra fluffy down comforter with breathable cotton duvet cover. This bed-in-the-bag choice gives a truly heavenly plush feel.

For added sumptuous effect (just in case you like your beddings extra fluffed), stuff an insert that's a few inches wider and longer than your cover into it.

Overdo the pillows

5/8

The best feeling ever is propping yourself up against a bevy of thick, velutinous pillows on a hotel bed while leafing through our vacation read.

To create the same experience at home, simply get more pillows! Start with pimping up your headspace with 2 down pillows, 1 or 2 fibre filled pillows, and perhaps a couple of decorative ones just for the looks of it.

Get a feather mattress topper

6/8

To create an authentic hotel bed experience, top your mattress off with a feather mattress topper for an extra dose of softness that your back will thank you for.

Double bonus: The extra padding will help keep your mattress in better condition too.

Stick to white linens

7/8

Erin Hoover, former vice president of design for Westin and Sheraton told Huffpost in 2014 that, "The all-white bed created this halo effect. People thought a room had been renovated, even if it was just the bed that had been changed. It had a huge impact."

Taking this to consideration, it's best that we stick to an all-white colour palette when it comes to dressing the bed in order to exude a sense of cleanliness and freshness that'll connote ultimate luxury in our bedrooms.

Turn up the warm lighting in your bedroom

8/8

Dim, warm-toned lighting can help the brain relax and shut off easier at night as it fools the body into producing the hormone melatonin, which helps regulate sleep & wake cycles.

Many hotels avail themselves of this fact by using lamps and sconces with warm-coloured bulbs to keep the room looking cozy at night.

In order to set the mood for a tranquil night of uninterrupted rest, try replacing your bulbs with warm-coloured, low-wattage ones instead.
