What strikes you the most about Ilhan Fandi is his disarming smile. At 1.84 metres tall, the fourth of five children is striking yet approachable. But during our shoot, it was his megawatt smile that lit up the room. He smiles easily, and takes direction effortlessly, embodying the perfect blend of professionalism and playful charm. His positive energy brings an undeniable light to any setting, making him a natural in front of the camera.

Growing up in the illustrious Fandi family, Ilhan and his siblings—IrfanIkhsanIman, and Iryan—were all immersed in the world of sports and entertainment from a young age. Their father is, of course, Singapore footballing icon, Fandi Ahmad. Their mother, Wendy Jacobs, is a former model. It’s a small wonder that he is such a natural on set. Speaking of his family, Ilhan shares that the boys especially share a special bond because “all of us play football”. And while there is the competitive spirit amongst the brothers, who are all professional footballers, Ilhan emphasises the supportive nature of their relationships. “There’s a healthy competition between us, especially with Ikhsan, since we play the same position. We learn from each other and support each other. This, I believe, makes us better players. We all have our own playing styles and personalities. I’m more the one who likes to get on the ball and then pass it to him. I look up to Ikhsan. He is my brother but also my striking partner.”

But if Ilhan could swap lives with any of his siblings, it would be not with any of his brothers, but rather with his multi-hyphenate elder sister, Iman Fandi. “Her life is totally different from all the boys,” he reveals with a twinkle in his eye. “Her work is crazy—she’s always either in the studio, travelling for music, or working on something new. But I really respect that about her.”

As a singer, model, and content creator, Iman has carved out a niche in the entertainment industry, proving that the Fandi legacy extends beyond football. “She works so hard and still finds time to inspire others. Plus, she gets sent loads of cool stuff! She always jokes that we spend too much money on things. But, hey, we don’t get freebies like she does,” laughs the 21-year-old.

Currently playing for KMSK Deinze in Belgium and representing the Singapore National Team, Ilhan’s journey is marked by discipline, dedication, and a maturity that belies his years. “Living on my own has taught me many life lessons,” he shares. “I’ve had to grow up quickly, manage my own time, cook my own meals—it’s made me more independent.” His experience playing in Singapore and Belgium has also given him a unique perspective on the sport. “Football culture in Europe is intense,” he explains. This is especially so when it comes to training. He adds. “The diet, discipline, and mentality are on a different level. It’s challenging but it has helped me grow tremendously as a player and a person.”

His disciplined lifestyle, he explains further, is crucial for his performance on the football pitch. “I am very strict with my diet and training regime because the team measures our body fat weekly. So, staying on top of it is essential.”

When he’s not on the field, Ilhan’s personal style reflects a more laidback yet refined approach to life. “I like to keep it simple and comfortable, but I can be classy when necessary,” he notes. “For instance, I was just in Bali last week and wore a shirt with linen pants and a pearl necklace—something chill and stylish.” His fashion icons include athletes like basketballer Devin Booker and footballer Leroy Sane. “They have their own unique style that I find inspiring, and their off-duty looks are effortlessly stylish.”

Ilhan’s favourite brands range from high-end labels like Louis Vuitton to more accessible names like Axel Arigato. “For me, it’s about having a few key pieces that stand out,” he says, adding that he pays particular attention to his shoes and hair because they are like the “rims of a car, you know? They complete the look.”

Despite his global lifestyle, Ilhan remains connected to his roots, often craving Southeast Asian dishes. “I am an island boy, and I miss asam pedas the most when I’m overseas,” he admits. “There’s something about that spicy, tangy flavour that reminds me of home.”

But beneath his easygoing exterior lies a deep sense of responsibility and ambition. “I want to play at the highest level possible and enjoy my life. Success for me is being a good role model for young Singaporean footballers and making my family proud,” he shares.

Reflecting on the challenges of carrying the famous last name, Ilhan shares, “People often say I’m on the team because of my dad. It has happened to Irfan and then Ikhsan. But we have each worked hard to prove ourselves in the game.”

“I’ve also worked hard to earn my place. I won the Young Player of the Year in the Singapore Premier League, and now I am playing in Belgium to push myself further,” he adds.

This determination and drive are deeply rooted in the family values instilled in him from a young age. “My parents have always emphasised humility and hard work,” he says. “My dad’s motto is, ‘If you’re humble, you never stumble’, and it’s something I live by every day.”

So what is his most significant achievement outside of football? “When I received my first salary in Belgium, the first thing I did was send money to my parents,” he shares. “I was raised this way, so it’s important to me to give back to the family.”

Despite his busy schedule, Ilhan indulges in his love for music. “I’m really into Afrobeats and Amapiano right now,” he says. “The beats are infectious and put me in a good mood.” His current earworm? Ayra Starr’s “Rush”, which plays on repeat. But balancing his professional and personal life is something he continually works on. “During the season, it’s tough to find time for myself, but I make sure to enjoy my days off. Whether it’s spending time with friends or just chilling at home, it’s important to recharge,” he says.

As for his aspirations, Ilhan remains focused while being open to new possibilities. “I’ve always dreamed of playing in Fifa, and scoring my first goal in Europe is also a major goal for me,” he reveals. “But beyond that, I want to be a positive influence and help elevate the Singapore football scene on the global stage.”

“I hope to stay in Belgium and play at a high level. I also want to score more for the Singapore National Team and help improve our rankings,” he says. “For me, it’s all about pushing boundaries and proving that anything is possible.”
