It’s not just handing in that flawless proposal that will see you climb your way up the corporate ladder. Perfecting the right work etiquette is just as crucial. Here’s how to politely solve those classic cringe moments at work.

Don’t click too fast
Horrors! You’ve sent your boss an e-mail calling her a lazy cow when it was meant for your friend instead. What should you do?
Phew! Admit your mistake immediately. Go over to your boss before she comes to you and say: “I can’t believe I did such a stupid thing. I’m so sorry.” If it was a personal attack, apologise profusely and pray that the damage is mended over time. If you were expressing frustration with how she handled work matters, use this as a chance to discuss the problem.

Get a grip
Horrors! You notice a client sneezing into his hand. Your boss then introduces you to him. Do you shake his hand or not?
Phew! Unfortunately, yes. Otherwise, your action could leave both your client and boss annoyed or embarrassed. It’s different from a social setting, where you can say no, and then offer an explanation like you’ve been fighting the cold.

Ooh… what’s that smell?
Horrors! How do you tell your colleague she has offensive body odour?
Phew! Surveys show that most people would want to be told, preferably by a friend. If you’re chums with your colleague, you could say something like: “I need to discuss something with you that’s difficult to bring up, and, if I were in your shoes, I’d like you to do the same. So I’m telling you as a friend that your body odour is an issue.” On the topic of smells, go easy on the perfume and avoid eating pungent foods like curry at your desk.
