From playing Rachel Yoo in The Heirs (2013) and Yoon Myung-joo in Descendants of the Sun (2016) to Tan-ya in Arthdal Chronicles (2019) and Yeom Mi-jeong in My Liberation Notes (2022), Kim Ji-won is a name that needs little introduction among fans of Korean drama. But what made us take note of the popular South Korean actress, besides her acting talent and fame, is her clear and bright skin. Kim Ji-won once revealed that she has sensitive skin that would turn red either from sun exposure or after a long day of work. As such, she has a simple skincare routine that relies on basic yet efficacious products to replenish and soothe her skin.
Here are her tips and tricks as well as the K-beauty products you can use to achieve clear, bright skin like Kim Ji-won.
The first step that Kim Ji-won takes to ensure that her skin always looks clear and bright is to be conscientious with exfoliating. She doesn’t use harsh abrasive scrubs (no walnut scrubs here) but instead opts for gentler formulations. Getting rid of the excess dead skin cells helps the skincare products she layers next to penetrate better.
Kim Ji-won's exfoliator of choice is this Dr. G peeling gel. It uses cellulose to lift away dead skin cells while causing minimal skin irritation. The formula, which can be used on wet skin, is also enriched with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C to hydrate and brighten at the same time.
After cleansing, Kim Ji-won preps her skin with a toner. She prefers using a hydrating formula to boost and reduce any moisture loss. While she doesn't share how she applies toner, we reckon that patting it onto the face is a quick and effective manner to do so.
This watery Dokdo toner is a cult favourite among K-beauty lovers as it is lightweight, hydrating and soothing at the same time. It contains a cocktail of skin-plumping ingredients such as glycerin, mineral-rich seawater and sugarcane extract as well as betaine, allantoin and panthenol that soothe inflamed skin. It contains the Hatching Ex-07 protease that gently exfoliates too.
An ampoule is next on Kim Ji-won's skincare routine. Ampoules are made to be more potent forms of serums as they usually contain higher levels of active ingredients. After a long day of work, Kim Ji-won likes to saturate a cotton pad with ampoule, let it get cold in the fridge before placing them on her cheeks for a quick and soothing mask session.
This CosRx ampoule employs 42 percent centella asiatica and madecassoside to greatly calm irritated, sensitised skin. High-weight hyaluronic acid then creates a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss as low-weight hyaluronic acid penetrates to hydrate and plump skin.
During the day, sun protection is important for Kim Ji-won. Guarding against ultraviolet rays will help delay the onset of all signs of ageing, whether it is hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and more.
At night, Kim Ji-won finishes her skincare with cream. She only applies it if her skin is feeling extremely dry as she believes that there's a limit to how much the skin can absorb.
Created with popular Korean beauty Youtuber Director Pi, this Etude sunscreen iteration is made with chemical filters that don't leave a white cast. It also soothes the skin as it protects as panthenol, madecassoside and centella asiatica extract are added. Fans of physical sunscreen can opt for the mineral filter version instead.
