Unique Christmas dining spots you need to know about at Great World
From Peranakan favourites to Japanese delights, here are some ideas for a twist to your traditional Christmas feasting
When we think of Christmas dinners, traditional dishes like turkey and mashed potatoes come to mind. But if you want to do something a little different this year, we have some out-of-the-box suggestions that are sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
The best part? These alternative Christmas dinner places are all situated at Great World, a one-stop destination this festive season for all of your shopping, gifting, and dining needs. Make your reservations early or put in your orders now if you don’t want to miss out!
We may be forgoing our usual year-end trips this year, but you can still get an authentic taste of Kyushu at Ginza Anzu. The farm-to-table concept means that you get the freshest produce - evident from the refreshing bites of their kiriboshidaikon from Kyushu, a dried daikon (white radish) dish that’s pickled in-house and served as an appetiser. Even their broth used for all dishes are freshly made from scratch in-house!
The star of the show, however, is their signature Tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlet), made using the freshest, highest-quality Mugifuji Three-Cross Breeding Premium pork directly imported from Canada by air. Their Tonkatsu sets, ranging from $23.54 to $40.66 and served with rice, soup, and side salads, give good value-for-money. And if you can save some space in your stomach, we recommend trying the oh-so-trendy fillet katsu sandwich (for takeaway only) as well.
Doing a house gathering for Christmas instead? Go for the Miyabi Set, a party platter available for takeaways in varying portions. It’s a decadent spread of all the freshest ingredients they have - from pork cutlets to prawns and even vegetables - battered and deep-fried to crispy, golden perfection. It’ll be a hit with both adults and children.
For those who are determined about not letting the holidays derail your weight loss plans, try Goobne Chicken Korea, a popular oven-roasted chicken brand from Korea that allows you to indulge in a healthier manner. The chicken that Goobne serves up contains less trans fat, carbohydrates, sodium and calories because not a drop of oil is used during the cooking process. Besides the original version, you can also choose from a variety of flavours, such as the spicy Volcano, Deep Cheese, Galbi (Korean-style barbecue), Pepper and Soy Garlic.
The 40-seat restaurant at Great World is the first and only Goobne Chicken outlet in Singapore. If you’re thinking of dropping by with a group of friends, we recommend ordering the UFO Fondue, $39. It’s a platter of wings and drumsticks served with a generous pot of melted cheese, which serves two to four people. Half the fun is wrapping the mid in thick coats of stringy cheese! Some other great dishes for sharing: the Seafood Jjamppong Soup, Japchae (glass noodles), and Kimchi Fried Rice.
Peranakan food for Christmas? Why not? Tuck into a hearty spread of Peranakan dishes with your family at The Blue Ginger - quality guaranteed, because it’s been a Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient for the past three years. Must-tries include the classic Kueh Pie Tee, $8 for four pieces. Each piece is packed to the brim with shredded turnip and bamboo shoots, and topped with a shrimp and a smidgen of tangy homemade chilli for that added zing. Another dish you cannot miss is the Sotong Keluak, $22. Made with black nut paste sourced exclusively from Indonesia, this stir-fry is rich, earthy and fragrant, and goes best with a heaping bowl of rice.
Besides the usual Peranakan classics like chap chye, The Blue Ginger is also serving up Ayam Panggang Roast Chicken, $38, adding a cheeky spin on the traditional roast chicken for Christmas. Each corn-fed French chicken is brined for several hours and marinated overnight with a wet spice mix, then roasted till golden brown. The tender, juicy chicken is served with the Ayam Panggang gravy, made with rendered chicken jus and a fiery homemade sambal. Can you say sedap?
Note that the Ayam Panggang Roast Chicken is for takeaway only. To order, call 6222-3928 or Whatsapp 6235-7042 24 hours in advance. Collection is from 10am - 12pm, and 4pm - 6pm daily.
End your Christmas feasting on a sweet note with The Dark Gallery, a chocolate-centric cafe that is known amongst foodies for high-quality chocolates made from cacao sourced from around the world. The Dark Gallery’s outlet at Great World is its first triple concept space, which comprises a cafe area, a retail gifting section, and a chocolate salon. The Salon offers dessert pairings sets that allows you to dive deeper into the nuances of the different flavours of chocolate, as well as a myriad of a la carte plated desserts and savoury plates for those who want to have a meal first.
Thinking of catching up with your friends over tea? The Dark Gallery has an all-day high tea set that would be perfect for the occasion. Priced at $65 for two, the set has both sweets and savouries, including sandwiches, mushroom spinach quiche, and an assortment of tarts and cakes. It also comes with a classic ice cream waffle set, served with 80 per cent dark chocolate ice cream, sea salt butterscotch ice cream, and toppings with chocolate sauce and maple syrup. It's worth the indulgence, we say.
