The Mid-Autumn Festival’s coming round on September 21 and if you’re already on the lookout for the mooncakes available this year, we’ve got a round-up of unique mooncake flavours to whet your appetite.

These little parcels packed with appealing fillings aren’t your traditional treats. Going beyond classics like lotus root paste with egg yolk and custard, hotels and bakeries alike have come up with the most delectable and novel confections to savour or gift your loved ones.

Tropicana Snowskin Mooncake, Goodwood Park Hotel

New this year from Goodwood Park Hotel is the Tropicana snowskin mooncake (from $42 for two), which takes inspiration from the tropics – think passionfruit and coconut puree studded with cubes of pineapple and coconut flakes. Enjoy it creamy and luscious, or straight from the freezer for a delectable treat.

And for an adorable take on the traditional baked mooncake, the hotel has introduced the Chicky Duo ($13.80 for a box of two), a pair of mooncakes baked in the shape of two chicks, and filled with lotus paste and egg yolk. Other offerings include mao shan wang, Black Thorn durian, Blue Pea Flower with White Lotus Seed Paste and Melon Seeds and cempedak snowskin mooncakes.

Award-winning RWS Executive Pastry Chef Kenny Kong and Head Chef Li Kwok Kwong of Feng Shui Inn have teamed up to create four luxurious mooncake flavours that are also chock full of nourishing ingredients.

Those of you with adventurous tastebuds, spice up your celebrations with this interesting confection, which delivers some heat instead of your regular saccharine-sweet mooncake.

We know what you’re thinking – mala chicken floss, and mooncakes? But contemporary Sichuan restaurant Birds of A Feather has concocted just that, combining aromatic mala chicken floss and salted egg yolk with a white lotus paste that’s low in sugar.

And the restaurant promises the mildly spicy floss will elevate the savoury salted egg yolk too. It comes in a gorgeous black and gold box of four mooncakes ($68), which also includes two Single Yolk Macadamia Nuts with Low Sugar White Lotus Paste Mooncakes.

Black Milk Tea Ice Cream Mooncake, Swensens

Swensens’delectable mochi-snowskin ice cream mooncakes ($10.90 per piece or $39.90 for a box of four) have returned, and filled with its well-loved ice cream flavours such as Sticky Chewy Chocolate and Durian King.

Coffee junkies, order the Maple Macchiato, a new flavour that combines Robusta and Arabica roasts with sweet maple syrup. Or if you prefer the aroma of tea, don’t miss the Black Milk Tea ice cream mooncake, which is also new.

This unusual baked confection ($68+ for a box of six or $10.80+ per piece) houses five different types of nuts and seeds that add lots of texture to the mildly sweet paste and is also studded with small chunks of Michelin-quality roast duck from Kam’s Roast that packs a flavourful punch.

White Peach with Prosecco Snowskin Mooncake, Paradise Group

Paradise Group has brought back its line-up of Fruity Liqueur Snow Skin mooncakes. Enrobed within silky smooth white lotus seed paste is a chocolate truffle core infused with different fruit liqueurs, and the latest additions to the collection are the White Peach with Prosecco as well as a Cherry with Martell Noblige mooncake.

The former marries white peach puree with sparkling wine, and is housed within a Valrhona’s Opalys white chocolate shell. The latter is a decadent mix of red cherry puree with Martell Noblige. Each is handcrafted and made with no preservatives, and priced at $65 per box of eight pieces.
