The best chocolate treats and bars to celebrate World Chocolate Day

As if we needed any more reason to celebrate the start of a weekend, today just so happens to be World Chocolate Day!

Mm, chocolate. How do we even begin to describe just how much that decadent dessert excites us?

We don't. We just appreciate it, which is why people came together to establish July 7 as World Chocolate Day.

Now you ask, just how does one celebrate World Chocolate Day? We've already learnt how difficult it is to create a perfect chocolate treat in a masterclass we attended. So what now?

We indulge, obviously. And we've curated a list of the most divine chocolate-y treats for your delectation, from chocolate bars to brownies to some good ol' sinful cake.

And yes, 10 treats may be overkill but you know what? We proffer only the best for our dear readers. (Plus it's been a long week and we deserve it, okay?)

The great news, though, is you have the whole weekend to pace yourself; why not extend the appreciation beyond today, right? (You could even go for a hair makeover inspired by that gorgeous colour of chocolate.)

Mm chocolate.

How do we even begin to describe just how much that decadent dessert excites us?

We don’t. We just appreciate it, which is why people came together to establish July 7 as World Chocolate Day.

Now you ask, just how does one celebrate World Chocolate Day? We’ve already learnt how difficult it is to create a perfect chocolate treat in a masterclass we attended. So what now?

We indulge, obviously. And we’ve curated a list of the most divine chocolate-y treats for your delectation, from chocolate bars to brownies to some good ol’ sinful cake.

And yes, 10 treats may be overkill but you know what? We proffer only the best for our dear readers. (Plus it’s been a long week and we deserve it, okay?)

The great news, though, is you have the whole weekend to pace yourself; why not extend the appreciation beyond today, right? (You could even go for a hair makeover inspired by that gorgeous colour of chocolate.)

1. Awfully Chocolate

2/11

We’ll start with a simple one. Most of us will recognise the clean aesthetics of this Singapore-owned chain dedicated to all things chocolate. Just like its design, the store serves a simple concept: Chocolate at a decent price.

That is why we love “HEI” (mandarin for ‘black’), the rich chocolate ice cream that comes in a cute box packaging – very Instagram-worthy indeed.

The ice cream costs $4.90 for a scoop but don’t be fooled, that scoop is enough to fill up the box, making it a real bang for your buck.

Psst: If you enjoy chocolate ice cream as much as us, then don’t you worry. We’ve got a review of five amazing chocolate ice cream to indulge your guilty pleasure.

Where: HEI ice cream is available at all Awfully Chocolate outlets

Price: $4.90

2. Chocolate Origin

3/11

Walking by this store whenever I’m at Bugis station is always difficult because on one hand, I don’t really need that gelato or the dense, perfectly smooth chocolate cake on display; but on the other hand, I kind of do. (I’ll admit I’m not perfect, I give in to temptation. That’s how my, and possibly your, friends have coerced me into spending more than I should.)

I tried its chocolate cake many years ago after walking by its shop in Changi Village and its haunted my waistline ever since. It’s not overly rich to make it impossible to down more than a slice (unfortunately…) but the two-layered sponge cake packs more than enough flavour.

And don’t get me started on the flawless crunchy glaze that’s just so satisfying to cut into!

Where: Cakes are available at all Chocolate Origin outlets.

Price: Cakes start at $32.80 and comes in five different sizes with two flavour options, sweet and dark.

3. Teuscher Chocolates

4/11

How’s this for reputable? The Swiss chocolatier was named by National Geographic as its favourite in 2012. Known for its Champagne Truffles, we thank the universe that the 85-year-old chain has made the decision to bring its renowned recipe to Singapore two years ago.

Another perk is that the store is conveniently located in central Singapore so you can quickly buy a box on your way home for a relaxing night in. Sounds like a perfect way to end the week, no? (It also makes a great gift if you’ve been struggling to find something for a friend’s birthday or your anniversary!)

Where: Capitol Piazza (NEUE Section), #02-31 Singapore 178905

Price: Prices start at $68 for a box of 16 truffles

4. Cat & The Fiddle

5/11

Naughty and Nice from Cat & The Fiddle is the kind of cake that invokes heavy breathing just by looking at pictures, so it only makes sense that we share such a gift with you. The aptly named cake is the beautiful product of a marriage between a Devil’s chocolate cake and a cheesecake. Definitely not for the faint of heart and small of stomach!

If you’re a homebody and would rather head straight home after work, then this will be right up your alley. Cat & The Fiddle is an online store that delivers cakes right to your doorstep. No need to lift a finger, if you so choose; just place your order before 5pm and the cake will arrive to your doorstep the next day.

Where: www.catandthefiddle.com

Price: $38.90

5. Chef Yamashita

6/11

This one’s for all the lovers of Japanese desserts. We love when chefs get creative and this right here is a perfect example.

Mt Fuji (yes that’s what the dish is called) is a heaping of a sponge cake, with layer upon layer of soft, airy chocolate cake. Binding those layers together is a generous slather of Japanese chestnut cream, which is one of those combinations that made us think: Why did no one do this sooner?!

Where: Blk 1, Tanjong Pagar Plaza, #02-44, Singapore 082001

Price: $7.10

6. Mad About Sucre

7/11

Ugh, just look at that perfect dome just begging to be devoured! If you’ve heard anything of Mad About Sucre, then you’d definitely be familiar with the San Domingue, the chocolate mousse dish that brings the boys to the yard.

The belle of the literal ball (of mousse) is a chocolate box filled with rum. Nuff said, really.

Where: 27 Teo Hong Road, Singapore 088334

Price: $12.80++

7. P.Osh

8/11

Sometimes, nothing beats a good old-fashioned brownie and that’s exactly what P.Osh serves. The dessert shop prides itself on its “traditional baking techniques”, which might explain why its brownies have built quite a name for themselves.

The brownies come in several flavours and toppings, so if you’re looking for a little more punch, then opt for the Kara Melissa (caramel and salt) over the plain ol’ brownie (which make no mistake is no less delicious).

Where: P.Osh has 11 outlets islandwide and you can find the nearest one here.

Price: Prices for the brownies start at $3.10

8. Cheese & Chocolate Bar

9/11

Yes, the chocolate bar is as swanky as it sounds. Located on the 55th level of Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the bar promises great views and an even better Instagram story.

Of course, that’s not the only reason why we’re talking about the bar. This might be the most sinful way you can celebrate World Chocolate Day and we’re here to play devil’s advocate. The bar offers a lot of chocolate goodness. And trust us, we mean a lot; more than 250 kg of chocolate is used each week.

And on top of being able to eat your body’s weight and then some in chocolate, the buffet offers you access to cheesy delights; it is, after all, a cheese and chocolate bar. So maybe ditch the tight dress and don some stretchy pants instead. You’ll thank us for it.

Where: Club55, Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Singapore 018956

Price: $48++ per person

9. Laurent Bernard Cafe & Chocolate Bar

10/11

If there’s a man we trust with chocolate, it’s Laurent Bernard, well-renowned chocolatier and owner of the Laurent Bernard Cafe & Chocolate Bar. Formerly known as The Chocolate Factory, the cafe has been around since 2006, making it a total of 11 years since it first opened its glorious doors to our humble, chocolate-loving bellies.

It’s not a pretentious cafe by any means, so flip flops are perfectly fine; feel free to indulge in chocolate treats made from the finest ingredients in complete comfort without worrying about how you look. (Although we do have a quick guide on some casual, chic outfits if you’re looking for some inspiration!)

While pretty much every dessert on the menu is worth trying (and sharing), we thought we’d highlight the Dark Chocolate Souffle, a dish that’s freshly baked upon your order. Served alongside vanilla ice cream and vanilla sauce, the souffle is exceptionally light and fluffy, which brings the entire dish so well together.

Where: #01-11 The Pier at Robertson Quay 80 Mohamed Sultan Road

Price: The Chocolate Souffle costs $18.50

10. Museo Restaurant & Bar

11/11

Finally, we thought we’d end with a crowd pleaser: A great lava cake.

For those of you who want some chocolate but not too much, we think Museo would be the perfect place for you to enjoy a great meal topped off with the perfect dessert.

Enter the Vodka Chocolate Lava Cake. Hear that collective sigh? It’s us wishing we had a plate of it in front of us right now. The plating is elegant, as you would expect from a restaurant like Museo. And if you’re worried about the hard liquor being too much for you, fret not: It’s not so strong that it affects you or worse, the taste of that gooey, chocolatey treat.

Where: Quayside Isle at Sentosa Cove, #01-22, Singapore 098375

Price: The Vodka Chocolate Lava Cake costs $13
