Just last week, Mcdonald's famed Nasi Lemak burger set was sold out nationwide... aaaaaand there goes our chances of trying the chendol Mcflurry that comes with it. Not to worry. To make up for the disappointment, we’ve scoured through our little red dot for some chendol-inspired desserts that are a must-try. (Psst, we’ve got a guide on spiked boozy desserts if you’re looking for those.)

For the uninitiated, chendol is a popular dessert amongst locals. Found commonly in Southeast Asia, it consists of shaved ice, tubular green rice flour jelly, coconut milk and drizzled with palm sugar (gula melaka, a great accompaniment to our national pandan cake) syrup. In Singapore, it is often teamed up with atap seeds (translucent and sweet glutinous ball derived from mangrove palms), diced jackfruit and sweetened red adzuki beans.

Now that we’ve got the base covered, are you ready for these six other interpretations of the traditional dessert?

Chendol Mousse Cake

Launching in August, Bakerzin’s newest Chendol Mousse Cake features soft and aromatic pandan sponge cake layers sandwiched between velvety chendol and gula melaka creme mousse.

We absolutely love the crumbly base, it complements the creme mousse well. Plus, this cake is surprisingly light and not overly sweet. Topped with chewy chendol jelly, we suggest chilling this flavourful cake for maximum enjoyment.

Nyonya Chendol waffles

Found at Shrove Tuesdays, the Nyonya Chendol waffles comes with two creamy scoops of chendol gelato and vanilla soft serve, topped with a generous portion of adzuki red beans, chendol jelly, dessicated coconut and drizzled with gula melaka sauce.

Famed for their yeast-raised batter, the waffles are fluffy and light yet crisp on the outside, complementing the gelato and toppings well. The vanilla soft serve is a good addition to the chendol-inspired dessert, which really helps to balance out the intense flavours from the chendol gelato. (Want more waffles? We’ve got you covered.)

Chendol Bingsu

Bingsus are always a great idea for cooling yourself down in this heat. How about a chendol bingsu? Made with thinly shaved ice infused with sweet condensed milk, the chendol bingsu comes with a very generous portion of atap seed (a sweet and translucent gelatinous ball from a mangrove palm, as mentioned above) chendol jelly, red beans, coconut ice cream and jackfruit slices.

Refreshing, we love that the coconut ice cream contains strips of coconut pulp. If you’re looking for a lighter incarnation of chendol, this is the dessert to try. A plus? It’s halal-certified.

Chendol Soft Serve

Found at Overrun.SG, another joint that is halal-certified, this Chendol Soft Serve comes slathered with a copious amount of gula melaka sauce, just the way we like it! The dessicated coconut lends a subtle aroma while the pandan jelly adds texture to the dessert.

If you’re planning to shop around Haji Lane, we suggest getting yourself a dose of this to cool you down in the heat. But get there fast, preferably before 3pm as everything tends to sell out rather quickly.

More importantly… check out their Chendol Fudge Cake. Think fluffy layers of gula melaka sponge cake with coconut and gula melaka fudge, all stuffed with red bean and strips of chendol jelly. Extra indulgent, this dense cheesecake is baked with a generous amount of gula melaka, red beans and chendol jelly.
