From The Straits Times    |

I’ll start my diet tomorrow now.

When my colleague asked if I was up for a challenge to try out a weight loss meal plan, I paused – Are you calling me fat?

My gut told me to punch my colleague, while my chubby body begged me to accept the healthy meals.

As you can tell by the title of this story, I finally decided to get a snatched waist — and YOLO Foods, a healthy meal plan service which delivers directly to your doorstep, generously supported my quest with their Weight Loss Pack ($96.30)

Packed with about 350 to 500 kcals per meal and featuring a variety of flavours ranging from Rendang Chicken to Herb Chicken with Roasted Potatoes, this weight loss pack is said to offer a calorie-restricted yet delicious way to help you on your weight loss journey.

Receiving the 7-meal Weight Loss Pack

At 10am on a Monday morning, I received a large cooler bag filled with seven individually-packed meals.

They include:

1. Rendang Chicken with Brown Rice and Curry Roasted Cauliflower (480g),
2. Cauliflower Rice with Herb Chicken and Spinach Eggs (475g)
3. Peri Peri Barramundi Fish with Cauliflower Rice and French Beans (475g)
4. Peri Peri Chicken Breast with Roasted Potatoes and Broccoli (425g)
5. Brown Rice Chicken Paella with Prawns, Squids and Green Peas (504g)
6. Beef Chilli Con Carne and Basmati Rice (400g)
7. Tofu and Chickpea Rendang with Kailan, Eggplant (400g)

Best of all, none of these meals are over 500 kcals each.

After taking the above pic, I stashed all of them away in the fridge.

If you can’t finish them all before the expiry date, you can choose to store them in the freezer. That’ll extend the meal’s shelf life by another two months.

Eating at one YOLO Foods meal for lunch every day

Due to pre-planned dinner with friends, I wasn’t able to eat the packaged meals for both lunch and dinner daily.

However, I made it a point to eat the meal packs for lunch every day in the office.

For those who have commitments and can’t eat the meals before they expire, there are options for daily delivery or ala carte.

What my YOLO Foods Weight Loss Pack tasted like

Healthy. Really healthy.

I mean, it’s low in carbs, lightly seasoned and full of proteins and fibres. It’s not going to taste like the BEST meal ever, but props to them for coming up with a variety of meals that are under 500 calories.

According to my experience, the meals provided allowed me to feel full enough that I could go without the mid-day snacking. In fact, there were times I couldn’t finish my meal.

How I felt after eating YOLO Foods for lunch for 5 consecutive days

It was manageable at first, but after finishing my seven weight loss meals I just went back to normal eating.

There was no change in my weight (but I would’ve gained some pounds over the Good Friday weekend if I didn’t have YOLO Foods for lunch the week leading up, so even maintaining my weight despite my long weekend feasting was a win).

Is it worth it?

If you want healthy, fuss-free and low-calorie meals delivered to your doorstep, then yes.

But the price of around $13 – $15 per meal may be a bit steep for most folks.

For those who are thinking of losing weight with YOLO Foods, you’ll need to commit by ordering over a longer period of time.

In practical terms, it’s not sustainable to rely on YOLO Foods as your everyday food source for the rest of your life.

Developing healthy eating habits and a balanced lifestyle on your own is essential. YOLO Foods is a convenient option that can assist you, but it shouldn’t be relied on as a complete safety net.
