From The Straits Times    |

If you haven’t yet heard of, seen or tasted the latest food trend sweeping Singapore, we’re not quite sure where you’ve been! Hot off the heels of truffle oil-flavoured everything, from fries to xiao long bao, salted egg yolk is the new ‘it’ foodie sensation.

Food fusion is at an all time high in Singapore and the latest French patisserie meets South East Asian flavoured croissants, dan tat (egg custard tarts) and more buttery, pastry dreams are all over the island. We’ve taste-tested, scoured and bookmarked some of our favourites for you to seek out and try yourself!

SALTED EGG YOLK MANIA
The original purveyor of the salted egg yolk croissant in Singapore, Flavour Flings cafe in Hougang, brought the food craze over from Hong Kong. Since then, The Straits Times documented five other companies that have jumped on the trend and produced their own versions. Da Paolo Gastronomia, Kokomama Marketplace and Antoinette all create the delicious buttery concoctions from scratch.

Antoinette’s delicious liu sha bao style croissants are a herworldPLUS-approved fave! The salty-sweet, thick consistency paired with the buttery flakiness of the croissant is a must-try. We recommend sharing one between two as they’re super-duper rich. Oh, and make sure you get in line early, as the croissants are often sold out within minutes!

Salted Yolk Lava croissant, $6.50 available from 11am weekdays and 10am weekend at Penhas branch, 12pm from Mandarin Gallery & Sofitel

Major chain BreadTalk is perhaps the biggest player to jump on the salted egg croissant bandwagon so far, having just launched its mini bite-sized version that is perfect for the office!

CHILLI CRAB CROISSANTS
The newest addition to Antoinette’s croissanterie is the chilli crab croissant. We had the privilege of tasting it before it launched and it’s a truly delicious way to the start the day! The crisp, buttery croissant is perfect (take it from a former Paris-dweller) and acts like a French twist on mantou! The filling is made up of real crab meat and homemade rempah and tomato sauce. You can taste the love that went into making them!

We’re sure this is the next food trend to take off in Singapore! And psst, watch out for their next croissant launch which the media helped to pick! I voted for salted caramel, here’s hoping it’s the majority vote!

CHARCOAL EGG TARTS AND OTHER LOCAL LOVELIES
One of my favourite ‘stumble-upon’ discoveries of late has been the Taaizi Polo bakery in Toa Payoh. It’s located just between the HDB and outdoor Toa Payoh mall stretch (opposite Mamak culture) and it’s just perfection! It sells a variety of delicious sweet and savoury items. In line with the current food crazes in Singapore there’s a particularly yummy pandan and salted egg yolk bao, as well as a fluffy and melt-in-your-mouth charcoal dan tat! The array of savoury char siu polo bao on offer are not to be sniffed at either. Prices start from $1!
