From The Straits Times    |

It’s almost ironic when you think about our nation’s obsession with spicy food. The last thing that I want to do under the sweltering tropical heat is to dig into food that’ll make me sweat profusely and pant like a dog. But we all can’t seem to stop ourselves from turning down that bowl of laksa or chomping down a McSpicy meal.

Having grown accustomed and desensitised to these spicy food, perhaps it’s time to challenge your tastebuds once again and introduce them to the real spicy food that Singapore has to offer. If you think you’re up for it, then this list is for you.

1. Lagnaa Barefoot Dining

With a wall of fame and a signboard that demarcates the various spice level of their curries, you know that Lagnaa takes pride in their fiery curry creations. And you can’t just jump straight and request for their spiciest Level 10 curry. You’ll actually have to first earn that opportunity by gobbling down their Level 6 – I Dare You curry challenge. And there’s no water or any yogurt-based items to help quench the heat. It’s just you and your tolerance for heat that stands in your way of making it to the wall of fame.

Opening hours: Everyday, 11.30am – 10.30pm

Get ready to feel the burn in your mouth and fingers. Sunset Grill and Pub is famous for their buffalo wings which come in customizable spicy levels. Choose from Level one to 35, and anyone who finishes one or more wings from Level 30 and above will have their name entered into their wall of fame. Be warned – many have tried to challenge these flaming hot wings and left in tears. We heard that anything beyond Level 10 is already tongue-numbing!

3. Southwest Tavern

Having a spicy meal does not get any more serious than at Southwest Tavern. Known for their dish ‘Spaghetti from Hell’, adventurous eaters who wish to put their tolerance to the test have to sign an indemnity form before getting to eat it. Finish this seemingly harmless plate of pasta within eight minutes and you get to walk away from $100 worth of dining vouchers or two towers of Heineken beer. Unleash total destruction on your stomach and have a go at Suicide Wings if you’re feeling up for it.

4. Ikkousha Hakata Ramen

Born out of Singapore’s love for spicy food, the Ikkousha Hakata Ramen store developed a God Fire ramen that’s as intimidating and fiery as it sounds. Definitely not one for the faint-hearted, the usual tonkotsu broth is now laced with an angry red chilli sauce that raises the spiciness to four different levels. You’ll find slurping this dangerous looking bowl a much harder affair now.

5. Chong Qing Grilled Fish

It’s almost scary and off-putting to see their grilled fish swimming in a pool of red hot sauce and chilli peppers. But that hasn’t stopped throngs of diners flocking down to enjoy this sweat-inducing dish. A combination of the classic Sichuan hotpot and grilled fish, this dish comes in a few variety of sauces that differ in terms of spiciness – from the mild ‘spicy fragrant’ to the intense ‘spicy numbing’.

KFC

No, I’m not referring to Kentucky Fried Chicken – it’s Korean Fried Chicken. Simply head over to Tanjong Pagar Road and you’ll be greeted with a surmountable number of Korean Fried Chicken outlets. Here are some KFC outlets you need to head to, to explode from the chicken’s spiciness.

6. Chicken Up

Spicy Yangnyum Up

The only thing that’s mild about this dish is its sweetness because ‘extremely spicy’ depicts the Spicy Yangnyum Up chicken the best.

7. Kko Kko Nara

Unlike Chicken Up, Kko Kko Nara doesn’t mask its spicy chicken with sweet sauces. Straight up, Kko Kko Nara says “hot & spicy sauce” – so that you’ll know what’s up.

Where to find it: Nearest convenience store or supermarket. OR you can also get them from eBay, if heading out the door isn’t your thing.

9. Hai Di Lao Mala Soup Base

Oh boy, Hai Di Lao’s Mala soup base isn’t funny, okay. Mala literally translates into ‘numbingly spicy’ and HDL has found a way to up the ante on how spicy mala soup bases can actually go. Because it numbs your tongue, rest assured that you won’t be able to taste specific flavours once you’ve had a taste of mala. Goodbye, tongue.

10. Coco Ichibanya

We’ve seen how Korean and Chinese spicy dishes can explode your brain and claim your consciousness, now let’s have a look at how Japanese food can do the same – and more. At Coco Ichibanya, the curry goes from level 1 (or 0), all the way to level 5. I’ve always stopped at level 3 – that’s when my soul gets taken away from me at the end of the meal. But level 5 is much worse. Try it only when you’ve had mala.
