We’re currently in the era of instaworthy desserts – sugary unicorn cakes, over the top milkshakes and lava cakes. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it can get tough for people who want healthier desserts that still taste good.
So we found some pretty great healthy options for you to try. From desserts that use natural sugars from fruit, to a cake shop that consciously uses less sugar in all its confectionary, here are four options to check out.
1. Mad About Sucre

This patisserie’s big on natural ingredients and heavily reduced sugar (without losing the flavour). Sometimes, this is done by using the natural sugars in fruit. Take the Poire, for example. It’s sweetened using honey and the French pears used to make it.
Instead of shipping the pears several days before it ripens, as many establishments do, Mad About Sucre ships them a day before they’re due to ripen, so they are bursting with sweetness on arrival.
Then begins a whole process of painstakingly extracting the flavours and sweetness by hand.
The prices are a little more than what you’d normally expect for desserts, but considering the hours put into creating a natural and healthy dessert, we think it’s well worth it.
Mad About Sucre is at 27 Teo Hong Road.
2. The Ugly Cake Shop

The cakes aren’t really ‘ugly’. But this bakery is so-called as no artificial colours, gum paste, or fondants are used – and those are the exact ingredients that help cakes look prettier.
Natural ingredients aren’t the only focus. All the desserts have about 30% less sugar than normal. That way, you can enjoy that rich chocolate fudge cake without the cloying taste.
Speaking of which, go for the bestseller, Big Daddy – an exceedingly moist and chocolatey cake.
The Ugly Cake Shop is at 535 Kallang Bahru.

3. Brownice

This one might surprise you a little. The main ingredient in this ice-cream is brown rice.
This ice cream cafe at Sin Ming uses organic brown rice milk and evaporated cane juice in its ice-cream (and yes, it’s vegan).
There is a surprisingly small amount of calories in every scoop – only 140, and that’s pretty significant considering regular ice-cream easily carries double the calories.
There are 16 flavours to try, including local favourites like gula melaka, coconut, and popular choices like matcha and earl grey.
Brownice is at 8 Sin Ming Road.
4. Delcie’s Desserts and Cakes

Delcie’s specialises in vegan desserts that use less sugar, or no sugar at all, where possible.
We’re talking cakes that have been naturally sweetened with agave, cookies made with coconut sugar and cheesecakes made with stevia.
And the best part is, these cakes all look and taste good, disproving the stereotype that vegan desserts simply aren’t up to par.
Delcie’s Desserts and Cakes is at 34 Whampoa West.
