Bawk bawk bish, Pezzo’s Hainanese Chicken Rice pizza is delish
We’ve seen our fair share of locally-inspired offerings, from nasi lemak burgers, to salted egg potato chips. We’ve even tried gimmicks like the Trump-Kim burger, that definitely won’t be bringing world peace anytime soon. But what about a pizza inspired by Hainanese Chicken Rice?
We’ll admit, the thought of a Hainanese Chicken Rice pizza didn’t sound too appealing for a chicken rice-loving team.
Loading carbs on carbs, the pizza sees fragrant rice, roasted chicken, fresh cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and melted mozzarella cheese topped with that addictive chicken rice chilli sauce. Ew you say, rice on pizza? However, it works well, and really did taste like chicken rice, albeit with cheese, and even then all the flavours meshed well together.
The chicken was juicy, the cheese gooey, and the chilli didn’t overwhelm the other elements, and is suitable for anyone whose spice tolerance is low. Perfect for cheat days, this pizza was the only one the whole team said they’d order again.
Our second favourite was Santa’s Surprise Pizza, which is similar to the popular Hawaiian pizza, except this has pine nuts, cranberries as well as the usual tomato base and chicken ham. This is also Pezzo’s first stuffed pizza crust – mozzarella cheese is stuffed into the crust – totally sinful, but worth it. The cranberries were a little too hard, but otherwise the pizza worked.
Santa’s Surprise and Satay Sedap by Pezzo Pizza
Dividing opinions were the Satay Sedap and the Kebab Boom Boom! pizzas. The Satay Sedap tastes exactly like your usual peanut sauce… Which isn’t for everyone. We had no issue with the chicken, red onions and fresh cucumber, but the sauce was overwhelming for some of us.
Saltiness was the main issue with the Kebab Boom Boom!, although the barbequed meat was nice.
Finally, there was the Fiery Hot Chick, which is not for the faint of heart. Our resident spice masters took on the challenge (we were warned just how spicy it was) – and lost. Shredded chicken is slathered with extra spicy chilli sauce, topped with red chilli, green and red pepper, mozzarella cheese and crispy fish chilli, but all this doesn’t matter, because you’ll enter a world of pain.
As one colleague said, the spice from the Fiery Hot Chick has no chill, as it’s not the slow-burn kind of heat, but the in-your-face explosion of all things chilli.
Available at any Pezzo Pizza stand at $5.90 per slice and $29.90 per pan (you can pick and mix different flavours), we recommend trying the local flavours at least once, with a slice of Santa on the side.
