While some people might refer to the One-North area as a ‘business park’, it’s definitely not only for business. It is, in fact, a massive area, made up of a number of buildings including Fusionopolis, Biopolis, Mediapolis and Rochester Park. There are loads of F&B outlets to cater to the thousands who work in the vicinity and it certainly isn’t short on options for affordable lunches. Here are seven that we found.
PIES & COFFEE
35 Rochester Drive, #01-02 Rochester Mall; www.piesncoffee.com
If you’re looking for something light and tasty, try one of the scrumptious pies here, most of which are priced below $10. Some of the appetisers might suit you fine too, such as the chicken olive pizza ($9.90) or Thai drumlets ($9.90). And there’s the classic caesar salad ($8.90) or creamy mushroom soup ($9.20), which is served in a crusty bread bowl, so it’s more filling than you’d think. This is a charming cafe that will keep you coming back for more.
ATTAP HOUSE
1 Fusionopolis Place, #01-14; www.attaphouse.com.sg
Enjoy a range of local cuisine in an air-conditioned setting, at this cosy cafe. The décor is reminiscent of an old attap house – hence its name – and the menu has an old-fashioned feel to it too. Everything here is priced below $10 so choose from dishes such as cashew fried rice with fresh chicken breast, rendang drumstick nasi lemak and Hainanese pork chop rice. And wash everything down with an old-fashioned teh or kopi.
THE RED NOODLE & BOTTLE BAR
1 Fusionopolis, #01-12 Galaxis Place; therednoodleandbottlebar.com
This is a noddle joint by day and a bar with live entertainment in the evenings. The food served here is Asian fusion and there are various noodles dishes in its menu, most of them under $10. Try the red king prawn noodle ($8), pork rib noodle ($5.80) or prawn laksa ($7).
TIMBRE+
73A Ayer Rajah Crescent, JTC Launch Pad @ one-north; timbreplus.sg
Don’t let its hipster description as an ‘urban food hall’ put you off. It’s a mix of restaurants and hawker stalls set in shipping containers and food trucks. Most of the dishes at the hawker stalls such as The Fishball Story and Wong Kee Noodles are prices below $10. Some of the other eateries have items on the menu within that price range too, such as D’s Joint and Dancing Crab Shack. Do note that it’s not air-conditioned so be prepared to face the heat if you’re heading here for lunch.
O’BRIENS IRISH SANDWICH CAFE
Biopolis @ One-North, Matrix, 30 Biopolis Street, Unit #01-05; www.obriens.com.sg
By now a very familiar name in Singapore, you can create your own sandwich here for $9.90. Or choose some of the freshly-tossed salads for just under $10, as well as some of the handcrafted sandwiches. They’ll definitely fuel you for the rest of the work day.
RAJ PRIME VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT
20 Biopolis Way, #01-03
Centros Block; www.rajrestaurant.com.sg
The thing about Indian vegetarian food is, even if you’re not a vegetarian, you’ll still find it delicious. And, with a good mix of North and South Indian dishes, this restaurant is a good place to get your Indian food fix. A lot of the dishes are priced under $10 and, with an extensive menu, you’ll certainly want to go back for more.
NANYANG OLD COFFEE
60 Biopolis Street, Genome @ Biopolis #01-05; nanyangoldcoffee.com
Head here for some good old-fashioned local food. The coffee and tea are made the traditional way but there are also a range of ice-blended drinks, if that’s more your, erm, cup of tea. Dishes like nyonya nasi lemak and bak kut teh are well below $10 so you’ll have spare change for snacks like chee cheong fun and swee kueh too.
