Review: 5 must-try desserts and mains at Dazzling Cafe Singapore

Dessert-obsessed foodies can rejoice, for the Dazzling Cafe chain from Taiwan has now opened its first Singapore outlet. Located at Capitol Piazza, this Taiwanese cafe will serve the chunky, caramelised honey toast, mochi waffles and more of the signature desserts and mains that it is known for.

Although this 90-seater cafe and bar does not take reservations at the moment, each group of diners will be asked to stick to a 90-minute dining period during the peak hours, to minimise the waiting time for those in the queue.

More new dishes such as a Japanese-style curry risotto will soon be added to the menu when the cafe and bar becomes fully open from June 6, 2015; the currently closed bar section will open in the same month. The Dazzling Cafe Singapore menu will also be updated bi-annually with new seasonal dishes, including items that will be given a localised twist.

In no order of merit, we share the top dishes to try at this cafe and bar:

1. Truffle Mushroom Risotto with Freshly Shaved Truffle, $24.90

Pick this over the lightly cream-coated spaghetti variant, for this main makes the best of its moreish, earthy flavours in its rich broth. We got to try a risotto that was a rich mix of truffle oil, chopped wild mushrooms and topped with freshly shaved truffle mushrooms and parmesan cheese.

2. Spicy Seafood Tomyam Tomato Spaghetti, $22.90

Specially created for the Singapore outlet, this dish features shrimps, mussels, squid and spaghetti basked in an addictive, tangy tomyam tomato sauce. You’ll get a super zesty first mouthful of this pasta dish, followed by a lingering fiery aftertaste that we bet spice-loving Singaporeans will love.

3. Mango and Coconut Gelato Honey Toast, $18.90
It’s another one of the Singapore-only menu items and a stand-out from the average vanilla and chocolate combination. The cafe has created a smooth and light coconut gelato flavour for this dish, which is matched with custard, zesty mango sauce and topped with pistachio and coconut shavings.

Don’t feel too intimidated by the huge size of this block of caramelised toast, for its centre has already been handily sliced into bite-sized cubes of bread within. A pair of tongs is also provided for diners to serve and share the dessert.

According to Serene Tan, the 22-year-old owner of the Dazzling Cafe Singapore, most Taiwanese customers typically tend to leave the tougher, crispy outer crust untouched; just in case you’re feeling a bit guilty about leaving it on the plate

4. Strawberry Ice Cream Waffle, $14.90

Although this cafe chain tends to be best known for its cube-shaped toast, our personal favourite dish of the day turned out to be this particular waffle. By pairing a crispy crust and a chewy mochi centre, this sweet treat brought together a tantalising mix of textures, which made us crave more.

5. Matcha Red Bean Honey Toast with Condensed Milk, $19.90

For fans who adore matcha (finely powdered green tea) flavoured desserts, this dish will be your must-try. You get that distinctive bittersweet taste in the matcha ice-cream used at this cafe, which takes off the sweet, caramelised edge of the toast.

Another notable mention includes the Rose Coffee ($8), which carries a light and refreshing floral aroma that blends well with the cafe latte; a dash of alcohol is also added to the brew.

The cafe serves other unusual brews as well, such as a creme brulee-flavoured cafe latte and an assortment of fruity slushies.
