It’s hard to put into words the sense of wonder and magic you experience on an Africa safari. The adrenaline rush of being just a few feet away from a pride of lions feasting on their kill, the cool air on your face on your morning game drive as you watch the sun rise over the savannah, and the warm hospitality you feel from the Maasai people when you visit their village to learn about their culture. An African safari will open your eyes to the incredible planet we live on and replenish your soul.

STAY & EXPERIENCE A GUIDED SAFARI TOUR: Lengishu House

Tucked into the hills of the Kenyan region of Laikipia is Lengishu, a beautiful retreat and sanctuary for adventure and unparalleled luxury. We were able to access this remote home via a small bush flight from Nairobi Airport which took about 45 minutes. Lengishu features six spacious bedrooms within four cottages, which are situated apart from the main house. Lengishu has a large friendly and attentive staff that caters to your every need and does an exceptional job personalising your trip to your group’s preferences. This house is perfect for larger families or a group of friends that is looking for a bit more privacy and exclusivity.

Lengishu House is located in Borana Conservancy which covers 32,000 acres of rolling hills and endless plains, all with the most magnificent view of Mount Kenya. Borana Conservancy is private land and therefore, Lengishu is able to offer guests some really unique experiences including horseback and camel safaris, on foot rhino tracking, quad biking, and helicopter safari tours.

My absolute favorite day was our horseback safari as it allowed us to leave our safari vehicles and experience the wildlife in a completely different way. On our guided safari ride, we were able to ride alongside impalas, warthogs, giraffes and even cheetahs! After a few hours of riding, we were surprised with the most beautiful bush lunch under a giant candelabra tree.

Lengishu provided a level of service that I have never experienced in my life. Everything from our beautiful breakfast spreads, the stunning setups for our sundowners (“happy hour” in the African bush), and unlimited massages with the most beautiful spa views, Lengushu thoughtfully created the most beautiful (and Instagram-worthy) I have ever experienced.

An 100-year old, award-winning camp run by a fifth generation safari family in the infamous Maasai Mara National Park. We stayed in their 10,000-square-foot exclusive use Bush Villa with five spacious bedrooms, accommodating 12 guests. The camp is designed to evoke the spirit of early twentieth century safaris with tented rooms and decor that is reminiscent of a golden era of romance, unspoilt wilderness and adventure.

Cottar’s Camp has strong ties and cooperation with the local Maasai community. We had the privilege of visiting a Maasai Village and experiencing and learning more about their rich and well-preserved culture. Visiting the local Maasai village was definitely one of the highlights of my visit to Kenya.

Cottar’s is unique in that they offer a range of purpose-driven experiences and activities that support their local community and ecology. Some of these experiences include engaging and learning about pangolin rehabilitation, foraging and tasting local wild food, beading with Maasai women, and participating their Maasai warrior school where you learn tough skills for which the local Maasai are renowned such as the art of spear throwing, bow and arrow shooting, Maasai jumping, fire making. Maasai warrior school was originally designed for kids but adults partake as well!

SHOP: Langata Link Shops

Langata Link Shops is essentially a house where every room has been turned into a different shop with beautiful crafts, fashion, food items from local Kenyan businesses. They have everything from weekender bags made out of colorful Kenyan kanga material to handcrafted jewelry to wild honey from the local hives of Laikipia. There’s also a lovely cafe in the courtyard of the house with excellent Kenyan coffee.
