This was a big week for would-be duchess Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. They attended their first royal family gathering together and on Thursday (Dec 21), Kensington Palace released their official engagement photos.

The Suits actress made a statement and stole the show with her black tulle gown with a sheer bodice, adorned with intricate gold leaf embellishments from London-based designers’, Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo’s AW17 collection.

Meghan was beaming in the photos taken on the steps of Frogmore House, a mile away from Windsor Castle, where the lovebirds will marry.

While we admire Meghan’s bold choice, we can’t help but wonder what the Queen would think of this dress that is a little more revealing and risqué than what we are used to from royal fiancées. It’s not hard to see that Meghan Markle is redefining our perception of how royals (or soon-to-be royals) dress. We also can’t help but think that her engagement photo dress is an indication that her wedding dress will be an unconventional one as well.

For the most part, netizens agree that the Suits actress was absolutely breathtaking in her semi-sheer ruffled dress:

However, the stunning black gown’s regal price tag of £56,000 (S$100,715), ruffled some feathers and sparked furious comments on social media. This wave of angry comments came even after the Kensington Palace confirmed the gown was ‘privately purchased’ and not paid for from official royal funds.

While £56,000 might seem like a lot to shell out for a dress, but Meghan looks absolutely beautiful in the dress. If the royal couple is happy, it’s all that matters.

What do you think? Is £56,000 too much for a dress?
