Singapore will play host to a gala inaugural awards event dubbed the Oscars of social media next month.

Iconic American rock band Aerosmith, South Korean pop phenomenon Psy, singer and The Voice judge Cee Lo Green, and Asian girl group Blush will be among the stars who will perform at the Social Star Awards ceremony at Marina Bay Sands on May 23.

These and other stars will also perform over two nights of concerts, dubbed Singapore Social at Gardens by the Bay, on May 24 and 25. The Straits Times is the official media partner in Singapore for both events.

The Social Star Awards is a 24-hour event which will give out 288 awards to the most popular stars and brands in social media in different categories, from movies to music to sports to games, over the past year. The awards ceremony will be streamed live on YouTube.

The $20 million event is organised by Starcount, a company whose website ranks celebrities based on their popularity on major social media sites. Its partners are the Singapore Tourism Board, Marina Bay Sands and YouTube.

Starcount’s joint chief executive Paul Morrison said the event is the first major social media awards ceremony in the world. He said Singapore is the ideal location to hold the ceremony because of its location and infrastructure.

Starcount tracks the activities of 1.7 billion Internet users who use the world’s top 11 social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter YouTube, Weibo in China, mixi in Japan and VK in Russia.

The top 12 categories, including the most popular celebrity or brand across all countries and brands, will be presented during the three-hour awards show here. The other awards will be announced online.

The awards show and concerts will be an annual affair to be held in Singapore for at least five years. Members of the public may attend the awards ceremony and a post-awards party. Tickets start from $388. Single tickets for the concerts will be from $150. Straits Times readers stand a chance to win free tickets.

More celebrities for the awards ceremony and the concerts will be announced later.

Awards will also be given out to “superfans” – the most avid celebrity followers – some of whom will be flown in for the ceremony.

Mr Morrison, who had brought in F1 Rocks, a series of major concerts at Fort Canning Park in 2009, said: “It’s all about the fans. The winners are not decided by a bunch of people in a committee, it’s about your interaction with stars on your social media platform.”
