Netflix’s hit Korean survival show 'Physical: 100' may have just ended but many of us are still reeling from the last episode that aired earlier this week. For those who have yet to watch the show, the premise of the series is pretty straightforward: 100 contestants go up against each other in a bid to find the ultimate winner who will also bag home 300 million won in cash. In short, think of it as Squid Games, sans the killing.

Since its debut in January this year, the show has not only motivated many of its fans to hit the gym, but it has also started some interesting discussions about the contestants in the show and their physiques. Remember when everyone thought that Agent H was going to make it far into the competition? Or how everyone thought that it was impossible for some of the teams to pull a 1.5-ton ship? While most of us are distracted by the amazing physiques and the games that were played during the show, we also had a few key takeaways from binge-watching the series.

As per usual, spoiler alerts if you haven't watched the show!

Age is just a number

If you’ve watched the show, then you’d probably know who we’re talking about.

Choo Sung-hoon began training in Judo at the age of three. Now, his professional mixed martial arts career is still going strong at the age of 47 and it doesn’t seem like he’s slowing down. In the show, you’ll notice that the star – who also goes by his moniker, Sexyama – is a great leader that many of the contestants look up to. Not only is he fit, but he also has the wits. He guides his teammates and discusses the right strategy for them to win, and he’s also supportive of all the contestants, even if they’re not on his team.

Also known to be part of the original cast for Return of Superman, along with his adorable daughter Sa-rang, the star continues to workout every day regardless of his age and keeps his health and fitness goals as one of his top priorities.

Developing mental toughness is a skill that can improve your performance in every area of life. And in this case, having mental strength can greatly affect your performance and is a critical key to success. One of the key scenes in the show that accurately displays the importance of mental strength would be the Punishment of Atlas. Players are tasked to carry the rocks and the three contestants who drop them first will be eliminated.

While Kim Kang-Min, and Shin Bo Mi Re tapped out in the first few minutes of the game, Jo Jin-Hyeong and Kim Sik endured for more than two hours before Jo Jin-Hyeong took the winning title for the game. Now, if there’s one thing we’ve learned from the show is that it’s important that you have a winning mindset. Once, you start showing signs of giving up, your opponent will only be more motivated to push themselves harder to win the game.

The show boasts a lineup of some of the most talented athletes in South Korea. From the ever-so-popular skeleton racer, Yun Sung-bin to freestyle wrestlers like Nam Kyung-jin, the list goes on and on.

But while watching the show, we realised that some of the professional athletes didn’t perform as well as we thought they would as compared to those who had a good balance of speed, strength and stamina like the cross-fitters.

For those who aren't familiar, CrossFit is a form of HIIT, and is best known as a strength and conditioning workout that involves functional movement performed at a high-intensity level. What's great about it is that the movements in the exercises are similar to the actions that you perform in your day-to-day life, like squatting, pulling, and pushing. It targets a wide range of muscles at one go, so you'll get to train your whole body while maintaining a good balance of strength, agility, endurance and more.

No one thought that Shim Euddeum would make it past the consolation round given her relatively small frame. However, the fitspo stunned her competitors with her admirable tenacity, which led her to the next round of the competition.

If you’ve been following her on YouTube, you would also know that she also managed to carry her co-star, Jo Jin-hyeong.

So let’s face it – it’s not always about the size. With the right amount of strength, willpower and technique, you can definitely go far, even if you’re not heavily built.

Never stop trying

It was heartbreaking to watch Shin Bo-mi-rae sacrifice herself for the Punishment of Atlas challenge. Nevertheless, despite being the first one to be eliminated, her performance during the challenge was definitely worthy of applause. She tried numerous times to lift the rock, and while she was struggling to pick it up, she never gave up and continued trying. She might have lost her place in the competition, but you could say that she won a place in our hearts.

Remember the boat challenge where they were tasked to pull a heavy ship several meters forward using only their body weight and rope? In this example, you could tell that Sexyama’s team did a great job in moving the boat, despite not having the “strongest” teammates as compared to Yun Sung-bin’s team. However, with the right strategy and a strong sense of teamwork, Chung Sung-hoon and his team, emerged victorious with an amazing timing of 13 mins and 34 seconds to move the boat from one end to the other.
