The pandemic has changed a lot of things about our lives in some pretty obvious ways. And this includes isolating ourselves and staying at home for days on end. But with that comes a few positives – less commuting stress, ability to customise your workspace and for some, getting pets.
These long periods of solitude have seen an increase in pet owners. A total of 3.2 million households in the UK have bought a pet since the start of the pandemic, with more than half of new owners aged 16 to 34 saying they wanted a companion due to their loneliness throughout the lockdowns.
In Singapore, pet adoption and fostering requests increased 10-fold since March of last year, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Singapore. Causes for Animals Singapore (CAS), an animal welfare charity, states that during the circuit breaker, fostering queries went up by 50 percent.
“Our furry friends can keep us calm and relaxed through many mediums, including cuddles, daily exercise (walking) and general affection. Throughout the pandemic, many of us wanted companionship - especially if we lived alone and our only human contact used to come from the office/seeing our friends,” says Nina Julia, wellness expert at the Center for Food Animal Health (CFAH).
Pet owners would often take to social media to share their precious pup pics and other adorable moments that give a well-needed serotonin boost, especially in times like these. “Pets help many people through loneliness, anxiety, and stress, so it’s no surprise that ‘petstagrams’ followings increased massively in the past year,” added Nina.
Based on the hashtag data from CFAH, ahead, we’ve rounded up the most (and least) popular dog breeds on Instagram.
With over 31 million Instagram hashtags, Chihuahuas have clearly won the hearts of many for obvious reasons. Named after a state in Mexico, this dog breed is known for being one of the smallest breeds and their hallmark round head shape. Not to mention, those distinctively intense eyes that are so expressive. They behave much like Terriers and are affectionate with familiar people, though they aren’t recommended for families with children. If you’re interested in a breed of dogs that are loyal, confident and made for city life, Chihuahuas are the breed for you.
One of the most popular Instagram accounts for daily Chihuahua videos and memes is @lolitathealien, with over 208,000 Instagram followers. This adorably entertaining pup sure knows how to enjoy herself.
Coming in fourth place are Pomeranians with over 18 million Instagram hashtags. These teddy bear-like dogs have been seen on celebrities like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, and are known for their vivacious personality and sharp bark. With a double fur coat that extends past their chest and shoulders, Pomeranians are known to be great companion dogs that can master any tricks or games. What’s more, even though they are quite active, Pomeranians don’t require daily walks as too much exercise might cause wear and tear to their knees.
Their lively manner has captured the hearts of many. Take, for instance, @jiffpom with 10 millions followers! I mean, how could anyone resist a Pomeranian in an oversized t-shirt?
After Pomeranians are Dachshunds, with close to 17 million Instagram hashtags. In fact, searches for Dachshunds increased by 37% since the start of the pandemic. “If you couldn't get an actual pandemic pet, a virtual one would’ve been the next best thing!” says Nina. Tiny legs, long bodice and an unmistakably alert expression, Dachshunds are known to make great companions in hunting and long distance running. Don’t be mistaken by their tiny frame as they have a mighty bark and make great watchdogs.

Fun fact: Dachshunds come in three different coat types- smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired.
Standard Poodle, Medium Poodle, Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle – Poodles come in different variations and have been ranked as the 12th most popular breed, with over 2 million Instagram hashtags. Poodles are eager, athletic, extremely intelligent, and often seen competing in dog shows. In spite of being one of the least popular breeds, Poodles have proven to be so well-loved that they are the national dog of France.

It’s hard to see why this lovable, intelligent dog breed only has slightly more than 451,000 Instagram hashtags, making Terriers the least popular breed on Instagram. Within their graceful, glossy fur coat is a sprightly, energetic dog breed that was once used to rid mines and mills of rats. Did you know that their coat is much like human hair and doesn't shed as much as other breeds? Great with families and children alike, the toy-sized Yorkshire Terriers are affectionate, vigilant dogs that are great to have at home.
