On-screen, they are rivals; off-screen, they are good friends.
South Korean actresses Kim Ye-rim, also known as Yeri from the K-pop girl group Red Velvet, and Lee Eun-saem, revealed their close friendship during a press conference in Singapore. Held as part of the media tour for their gripping K-drama Cheongdam International High School, the duo shared more about their characters as well as unforgettable moments.

In Cheongdam International High School, Kim plays affluent and influential queen bee Baek Jen-na, who sets her sights on tormenting and bullying the newly arrived transfer student Kim Hye-in (Lee). The two end up as enemies in the titular elite school, getting involved in an intense power struggle over the school's societal hierarchy.
Behind the scenes, however, the actresses are close friends. Here are some of the top insights we gleaned from the press conference.
Kim prepared English responses, and when asked about their friendship, she says: "Since we're all the same age, we became close quickly and we relied on each other a lot while shooting the drama. We've actually invited each other [to meet up] a couple times outside [of filming the drama] as well. Recently, we went out together to eat and take black-and-white photobooth pictures together. I always have a good time whenever I hang out with her."
When asked about her character, Lee revealed: “Hye-in and I have totally different personalities. When I first read the script, I felt that a lot of her actions were illogical and irrational. I think the audience would think so too. But I had to remind myself that this is her logic. This is what makes the show more interesting too, just seeing what she does next.”
Lee noted that the main challenge of filming was the cold, as the drama filming had taken place during winter and was filmed in the wee hours to avoid large public crowds. To combat the cold, she "used a lot of heat packs all over her body".
Kim revealed that she would like to dabble into the fantasy genre next, while Lee revealed that she would be keen to be in an action drama, sports-related drama, or romance.
Of course, the topic diverted to the local dishes of choice in Singapore. For Kim, she "did her research" and want to try "some delicious kaya toast", while Lee is looking forward to "the famous chili crab".
Cheongdam International High School is showing on Wednesdays at 8pm on tvN Asia (Singtel TV Channel 518 and StarHub TV Channel 824), with the final two episodes airing on June 28.
