What could be more exhilarating than kicking off the new year's calendar with a week-long celebration of contemporary art? Running concurrently with the annual Singapore Art Week, ART SG will be unveiled from January 19 to 21 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, with an exclusive VIP preview commencing on January 18.
The fair is set to showcase 116 galleries hailing from 33 countries and territories, accompanied by a meticulously curated program. Expect a mix of large-scale installations, film presentations, and city-wide activities, all crafted in collaboration with Singapore's visual art museums, private foundations, and gallery districts.
Here are five highlights you can't afford to miss at SG ART 2024:
Eko Nugroho will be UBS’s specially commissioned artist for ART SG 2024
Eko Nugroho is a prominent contemporary artist based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. From paintings, drawings and embroideries to murals, sculpture and video, his works are deeply anchored in both local traditions and the urban environment. Nugroho’s iconic visual language playfully intertwines political messages with appropriated aesthetics of street art, graffiti and comics. At ART SG 2024, Nugroho will showcase an installation and artworks centred on community and environmental awareness, including embroidered paintings and pieces crafted from upcycled materials.
The Galleries sector is a multi-disciplinary presentations by 69 leading international and regional artists, while this year's Focus section features 36 presentations by galleries emphasising the development of artistic practices, the exploration of different mediums, especially digital art and new media, and emerging to mid-career artists.
