In the world of fame and stardom, it's not uncommon for celebrities to face criticism and scrutiny. Here are eight notable Asian celebrities from the K-pop, K-drama, TVB sphere and beyond who have been called out for their alleged rude behaviour. Were the criticisms fair though? Well, have a read and judge for yourself!

Blackpink’s Jennie

1/8

Jennie made headlines on the Australian leg of Blackpink’s ‘Born Pink World Tour’ when she abruptly left the stage halfway through ‘Lovesick Girls’. YG Entertainment later released a statement saying that she was unable to continue performing due to her “deteriorating condition” and was told by medical professionals to get ample rest.

Later that night, Jennie was spotted having hotpot at Haidilao with the rest of the Blackpink members and their entourage. This angered fans, who took issue with her leaving the concert without saying a word to those who have bought tickets to see her.

Netizens on Weibo and Xiaohongshu further pointed out that Jennie has also walked out on shows in Copenhagen, Canada, Hong Kong and Thailand, which added fuel to the fire. Fans took to social media to express their displeasure and accused her of being lazy.

This isn’t the first time Jennie has been accused of laziness. Back in 2018, Jennie was called out by Twitter users for her languid demeanour on stage, which was a stark contrast to the rest of the Blackpink members who were dancing energetically. It was later revealed that the K-pop idol might have been more reserved on stage due to an ankle injury, but the same criticism would surface every now and then during Blackpink’s promotion cycles.

Red Velvet’s Irene

2/8

In 2020, a fashion stylist and editor took to Instagram to talk about an interaction with a K-pop idol that left her in tears. While she didn’t name the idol, she hashtagged the post #psycho and #monster, which led Internet sleuths to deduce that the idol in question is none other than Red Velvet’s Irene, whose songs include - you guessed it - ‘Monster’ and ‘Psycho’.

Details of what transpired were never made public, so all we know about the incident from the stylist’s account was that she was shouted at and verbally abused by Irene for 20 minutes - in front of everybody who was on set.

Irene later publicly apologised on Instagram. But it seemed like too little too late, as other industry insiders also confirmed that Irene has quite a reputation for being difficult to work with.

Seo Ye-ji

3/8

The 33-year-old Korean actress shot to fame with It’s Okay To Not Be Okay, but her popularity was short-lived as she was soon accused of being manipulative in her relationship with actor Kim Jung-hyun.

It was revealed that her controlling behaviour caused a lot of issues for the actor, who suffered from an anxiety disorder and had depressive episodes. Tabloid news outlet Dispatch revealed that Seo Ye-ji even forbade Jung-hyun from having any physical contact with his co-stars. At that time, Jung-hyun was starring in a romance drama opposite Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun. In order to totally avoid any skinship with his co-star, Jung-hyun requested for a total of 13 scenes to be changed. He eventually left the series halfway through its run.

More controversies followed after this revelation. Ye-ji was also accused of school bullying, lying about attending university in Spain, and being verbally abusive to staff.

Linda Chung

4/8

Former TVB actress Linda Chung, who has long been associated with a "nice girl" image, faced accusations of being "two-faced" when she declined to take a photo with a fan and their family. This incident, which occurred late last year, sparked a backlash from netizens who were disappointed with her refusal.

“It was pre-Covid, but she refused our request with a fearful expression on her face, as if she was scared of us. It was ridiculous,” the fan posted on social media.

The 39-year-old, who is currently based in Vancouver, Canada with her husband and three children, responded by telling the media: “People who know me well will understand. There is no need to explain too much.”

After that, more anecdotes of Linda being rude surfaced online. One crew member said that she’s known for being rude to “people who are beneath her”, while some netizens who claimed to be her neighbours said that she’s a rather unfriendly person - a far cry from her public persona as a nice girl.

Patrick Lee

5/8

Local actor Elvin Ng opened up about his distressing experience on the set of the 2018 drama Gifted, where he was subjected to bullying by Taiwanese actor Patrick Lee. During a revealing interview in 2021, Elvin shared that Patrick not only attempted to disrupt his performance by making him forget his lines but also resorted to making disrespectful remarks, driving Elvin to tears.

The shocking revelations of Patrick's unprofessional behaviour were further supported by other media personalities who had encountered him. Host Danny Yeo disclosed that Patrick publicly shouted at him and demanded he leave during an event. Additionally, in 2014 while filming the drama Spice Up, Patrick was reported to have verbally attacked actor Xu Bin, hurling expletives at him.

Kim Yoo-jung

6/8

Back in 2016, Kim Yoo-jung was at an event for her movie Because I Love You. The then 17-year-old was heavily criticised for leaning casually on one leg and checking her nails, which gave off the impression that she was bored.

Some netizens jumped to her defence, pointing out that she was courteous during the rest of the event and even greeted the audience with a formal 90-degree bow. Kim Yoo-jung later released an official apology through her agency, saying that she will work hard to make sure that it never happens again.

Edison Chen

7/8

This list wouldn't be complete without the mention of Edison Chen. The actor-turned-entrepreneur has a longstanding reputation for being surly, which is quite on-brand for his brooding bad boy persona.

In 2013, his interview with Cable TV Hong Kong was scrapped because he became uncooperative. The interviewer had apparently asked Edison what he would do if his popularity takes a dip and affected his fashion label. Edison took it as an insult and shut down afterwards, which caused the interview to become awkward and, well, unairable.

Even in recent years, he still makes the headlines every now and then for a harsh interaction with the paparazzi. Fans are not spared either - in 2019, he spotted someone filming him and his partner model Qin Shupei, and proceeded to knock the device out of their hands.

Jing Boran

In 2021, Chinese actor Jing Boran's behaviour at the airport landed him in hot water with Weibo netizens. He was caught on video looking visibly impatient and irritated when a security guard asked him to remove his bucket hat for temperature screening. Not only that, he was also pretty dismissive of the fans who had been waiting for him at the airport gate, which was a stark contrast to his warm public image.

The video spread online, which sparked accusations of diva-like behaviour. However, some netizens jumped to his defence, stating that the extra pandemic measures could be the cause of his frustration.
