Yes, it’s all over. The world is still reeling from the unexpected results of the United States’ 2016 Presidential elections, which must surely rank as the most divisive and disliked electoral campaigns in recent history.

Most high-profile American celebrities were especially vocal during the course of this campaign, most notably those in Hollywood. It’s no secret that quite a few Hollywood celebs identify as Democrat, with an overwhelming number being enthusiastic supporters of Hillary Clinton.

Along with the rest of the world, these stars took to social media in the aftermath of the results to express their sadness, horror, anger and in some cases, jokes. Lady Gaga notably led a protest outside Trump Tower, along with other stars like Madonna and Cher.

Keep reading to see our pick of the most notable celebrity reactions to Trump clinching the presidency.

TEARS AND FEAR

Some celebrities clearly felt extremely defeated and sad, which was pretty heartbreaking to see. In other cases, they seemed just plain scared.

Miley Cyrus most notably broke down in a Facebook video that she posted in the wake of the results. She lamented the loss of Clinton as the potential POTUS and expressed her deep disappointment and fear with the election.

However, in a surprising turnaround, she went on to state that nothing will change the fact that Donald Trump is now the president, and she will accept that. The singer-actor even offered to assist Trump through open discussions with issues he may not be familiar with.

OUTRAGE

Others were considerably more angry and frustrated with the state of their country. In a surprising move, many stars decided to hit the streets to join the wave of protests that have been spreading across the States.

Katy Perry, one of the most outspoken stars to campaign for Hillary, let loose a barrage of tweets calling for a “revolution” and for people to “rise up”.

Mark Ruffalo was one of the stars out protesting with unhappy voters.

But what had to be the strongest and most inspiring reaction was that of Lady Gaga’s. In the immediate release of the results, Gaga took to the street outside Trump Tower to protest. The singer-songwriter stood on a truck with a sign that said “Love Trumps Hate”. Since then, she has changed her Twitter name to #CountryofKindness in an effort to initiate a campaign spreading messages of love and solidarity.

HOPE

But most heartening of all, many celebs were hopeful and advocated messages of peace, love and positivity.

When asked how can anyone move on from this, J.K. Rowling responded with this.

Cher was one of the stars who also took to the streets to join in the night of protests, with an attitude of solidarity and love.

Ellen DeGeneres went in a totally different direction, but what she said was just as touching as anyone else.

John Legend

It’s been quite a time for the United States and the rest of the world as we all watched the election results come in early Wednesday morning. Some of us wept for our country. Some of us celebrated. Some of us are already taking to the streets in protest. You all know how I wanted and expected the election to go. I wanted us to choose unity and inclusion over building walls and singling out ethnic and religious groups for hate and suspicion. I wanted us to choose progress over yearning for some long-lost mythical era when America was supposedly greatest. I wanted us to destroy the highest glass ceiling instead of electing an admitted sexual assaulter. But we did not. These are the election results and all of us will have to learn to deal with it. I will not give up though. I will continue to be aware and vigilant. I will continue to speak out for justice. We didn’t think about the election when we planned the release date for this song and video. But in this time of conflict and uncertainty, it’s clear that we all need more love. I find it in my family and in my music. Embracing my family has made today full of love and light despite the bad news. But it’s also important that we show love and empathy to people who may not look like us or live like us. Those who are marginalized and rejected, feared and left behind. The video premieres Friday and features a diverse group of people from all over the world. From Standing Rock to Iraq, from Orlando to the DR. Love is universal. We all need it. We all can give it. And it will ultimately win over hate. I have to believe that. If you want to join in our celebration of love, use the hashtag #lovemenow and send us a picture of you and someone you care about.

HUMOUR

Some stars tried to leaven the mood in the face of nation-wide fear and frustration.

George R.R. Martin wrote a blogpost quipping that “Winter is coming. I told you so.” (If you aren’t laughing hysterically right now it’s probably because you don’t watch or read Game Of Thrones.)
