Whether it’s in homegrown television series or films (think Phua Chu Kang and Ah Boys to Men), ah bengs are no strangers to many of us. Looks-wise, they’re often spotted with dyed hair, chunky gold necklaces and bold outfits. Character-wise, most of the ah bengs on-screen appear to be a bit crass, but always carefree, brave and confident.

Ah bengs might also be considered lacking in formal education, loud in their speech, and possessing an unfiltered and no-holds-barred attitude towards everything in life. Their fearless style of living also means that when it comes to listening or talking to them, it can often turn out to be an entertaining exchange.

Overall, ah bengs are thought to project a bad boy image, which some of us may find hard to resist. Although some of our mothers might disapprove of them initially, they might win their hearts over anyway because of their heart of gold.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourite ah bengs — whether they’re assumed bengs by the public, self-identify as one, or, simply played one to a tee on our TV screens — worth looking out for on social media.

1. Mark Lee

Mark Lee is a veteran in Singapore’s entertainment industry, renowned for his work as a comedian, actor, television host, and now, radio host. His famous works include I’m Not Stupid, Ah Long Pte Ltd, and Money No Enough.

In 2020, Mark was nominated for Best Leading Actor at the Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards for his role in the comedy-drama film Number 1, which co-starred Jaspers Li, Kiwebaby Chang, and Henry Thia. With a career spanning decades, Mark continues to entertain audiences with his versatility, humour, and charisma.

2. Noah Yap

Noah Yap rose to fame through his role in the Ah Boys to Men film series, where his comedic portrayal of Recruit IP Man endeared him to many. Beyond acting, Noah engages his followers with content ranging from lifestyle insights to personal anecdotes.

Last year, he fulfilled one of his dreams and went from acting to stand-up comedy. Together with veteran comedy performers such as Hossan Leong, Rishi Budhrani, and Pam Oei, Noah delivered his debut performance for Dream Academy’s Happy Ever Laughter show at Capitol Theatre.

3. Wang Weiliang

Although Jack Neo’s local film Ah Boys To Men has been released for over a decade, fans will still remember Weiliang as the Lobang King. These days, the actor-turned-entrepreneur has gone from on-screen to more behind-the-scenes.

His businesses include a music school, Seed Music, a homegrown movie company, Hong Pictures, and a production company, Paperplane Productions. Earlier this year, he was the executive producer and starred in the Thai-Singapore Lunar New Year film Baby Hero, which featured Ya Hui, Long Lee, and Hayley Woo.

4. Simon Khung

If you’re an active user of TikTok, you’ve probably come across Simon’s content. The TikTok personality openly shares his whirlwind life experiences, including his 16-year drug habit and rehab, and on the more humorous and light hearted front, skits on Ah Bengs in ridiculous scenarios. He tied the knot with his wife, Chloe Eong, in July 2024, and the couple has just welcomed their firstborn.

Simon owns a social media agency, Peace Street Productions, and the apparel brand Chance, and he co-hosts the podcast Rise ‘n Shine with fellow other notable “ah beng influencers” Noah and Luke.

5. Tommy Wong

Tommy Wong is a prominent Singaporean influencer whose followers love his humorous and relatable content, especially his skits where he portrays a typical Chinese dad who is exasperated by his kids. He’s also the founder of Nothing But Cheeseburger (NBCB), which started because he tried to satisfy his pregnant wife’s cravings during the COVID-19 lockdown.

He eventually turned his home-based business into a full-fledged burger joint with two branches in Orchard Central and i12 Katong shopping malls. Tommy has also participated in the Comedian VS Singapore YouTube series, showcasing his comedic talents in friendly battles with peers including Franster Wong, Luke and Simon.

6. Luke Chan

Known for his comedic skits with his girlfriend on social media, Luke has garnered close to 300K followers across Instagram and TikTok. Similar to his friend and TikTok star Simon Khung, Luke is open about how he’s overcome his drug addiction.

He now hosts a podcast titled Rise ‘n Shine with Simon and Noah. The podcast, which is available on YouTube, features the trio interviewing well-known personalities who aren’t afraid to discuss sensitive and/or controversial topics.

Some guests who’ve appeared on the podcast include Fakkah Fuzz, Naomi Neo and Dennis Chew. Luke has also ventured into the F&B space, opening his first eatery, Pasta Papa, in December 2024.

7. Kelvin Tan aka Mayiduo

Local content creator Kelvin, more famously known by his moniker Mayiduo, co-founded a media company, Double Up, with fellow influencer Charlene Huang. The company manages talents including Eric, Royal Pek and Shirli, to name a few. Besides that, he’s also the founder of EL Print Pte Ltd which specialises in T-shirt printing, and SG Interior Design studio.

Last year, he made his directorial debut and released Aunty Like, Aunty Subscribe!, starring Charlene Huang, Xixi Lim and Regina Lim.

8. Jason Chua

Jason, the founder of Beng Who Cooks, began his culinary journey in 2018 with a protein bowl hawker stall at Hong Lim Food Centre. The stall offered $1 specialities, including Sea Salt Broccoli and Disco Mushrooms. The following year, his business was hit hard by COVID-19.

With his business partner, Hung Zhen Long, Jason set up Beng Who Cares Foundation and donated up to $15,000 in meals to needy families. This initiative earned them a nomination and special commendation for the President’s Volunteerism and Philanthropy Awards in 2020.

9. BenWOAH

The usual cookie-cutter type of influencer content is not something you’ll expect from Ben’s TikTok and Instagram. He stands out with his unique way of creating content. His reels are more profanity-laden than professional, but there reliability of his angry rants are precisely what catches his followers’ attention.

His crude humour, uninhibited rage, and uncensored attitude have amassed him over 138K followers on his Instagram and TikTok accounts. But be warned: his overflowing anger and foul language are definitely not for the faint-hearted.
