It’s no secret that the Cineleisure, once a Y2K bastion, has fallen into hard times in recent years. An upcoming collaboration between two leading names in local cinema – independent darling The Projector and stalwart Golden Village – might just be the key to reversing that.

Titled Golden Village x The Projector at Cineleisure (GVxTP), the collaboration is described to be an unprecedented melding of what each player is known for: the colourful selection of international film festivals, live events and alternative films that fans of The Projector have come to love, as well as Golden Village’s crowd-pleasing hits.

This also means the GVxTP project will replace cinema operator Cathay Cineplexes, which has been a long-time signature tenant at the 26-year-old Cineleisure and will hold its last day of screenings at the building on June 30.

The GVxTP project is set to officially launch this December at Cineleisure, but it’s important to note that the collaboration is not a joint venture, acquisition or merger. Instead, The Projector general manager Prashant Somosundram tells us that GVxTP is more a co-sharing of space by two best-in-class operators.

There are six halls in total, with three halls branded by Golden Village (and which offers their signature blockbusters), while the other three halls are programmed by The Projector and will showcase the eclectic fare they’re known for.

Beyond films, The Projector will also be operating a pop-up cafe, bar and live event space at Cineleisure from this July to December, as well as as continuing their growing slate of non-film content, including music, comedy, panels, festivals, art exhibitions and pop-up markets.

The Projector team has selected “films that are either elegies to cinema, or have meant something to us” for the final month of operations at their Picturehouse outpost.

“Over the years, we have redefined what a cinema can offer: an expanded repertoire of film, art, culture and events,” says Karen Tan, co-founder of The Projector. “It is exciting to come together with Golden Village as it provides an opportunity to offer our experiences to a broader audience.

This collaboration that leverages both our strengths will be a win-win for cinema lovers while remaining true to our independent spirit, offering a personalised and authentic experience for our audiences.”

Meanwhile, if you’re a fan of The Projector X: Picturehouse, you might want to hit it up soon, as that pop-up will conclude next month, with the final screenings taking place July 8. The Projector team will be also partnering Salsa Y Comida, Kampong Boogie and EatMePopTart to throw a massive farewell party on July 9 for a final farewell to the Picturehouse space – be there.
