Marina Tran-Vu is fully committed to contributing towards a more sustainable world. Apart from her environmental venture, Equo, which produces natural and plastic-free alternatives to single-use plastic items, she actively seeks out other eco-friendly businesses in her home city of Ho Chi Minh City. This year, she took part in the Cartier Women’s Initiative to shed light on Equo and pursue her entrepreneurial aspirations.

Encouraged by her friends and family, Tran-Vu seized the opportunity to participate in the 2024 Cartier Women’s Initiative, aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs driving change to reach their full potential. Taking this leap of faith, she secured her place among the 33 participants highlighted in the initiative. “The application process has taught me so much about myself and my business,” says Tran-Vu. “It allowed me to reflect and ask questions I hadn’t considered in a very long time… which motivated me even more.”

Tran-Vu finds encouragement in the growing acceptance of environmentally friendly practices, particularly among the youth in her beloved Ho Chi Minh City. This city holds a pivotal position as one of the key markets for Equo, where Tran-Vu tackles the issue of excessive plastic use, focusing on items like straws, utensils, and food containers. Collaborating with partners such as cafes and bars across the city, she strives to introduce more people to sustainable practices and establish reusable, non-plastic alternatives as the new standard.

“We started to see people become more educated on the topic, more engaged in learning about sustainability, and figuring out how to do better and be better,” says Tran-Vu, who views the rising trend of environmental consciousness as both crucial and exciting.

Tran-Vu envisions Equo continuing to showcase sustainable independent brands and products from Asia to the global stage. Her aspirations extend beyond merely reducing single-use plastic, waste, and carbon emissions; she aims to inspire the next generation of sustainability entrepreneurs and businesses to strive for more. Naturally, she hopes to make Vietnam proud through Equo’s growth.

Delectable eco-friendly dining spots

“One of my favourites is a place called Joi Factory on Nguyen Trai in District 1. It offers vegetarian food, endeavour to be as sustainable as possible, and are also pet-friendly. It’s truly an incredible establishment. Another favourite is Quan Bui Original on Ngo Van Nam. It specialises in serving traditional Vietnamese cuisine and beverages that are simply outstanding, served family-style, making it ideal for gathering with friends and family.”

Local vintage and second-hand thrift stores

“There are plenty around the city, but my favourite is Mayhem, a two-story shop located in District 1 on Le Thanh Ton. It features an upper level dedicated to ladies and accessories, and a lower level for men. I’ve discovered some of my favourite items here, including a vintage blazer and glasses.”

Exciting Vietnamese fashion labels worth exploring

“Two particularly notable ones spring to mind. Firstly, there’s Paradise, which exudes a super funky vibe – you might have spotted its stickers around. I adore its blend of retro and contemporary elements, brimming with creativity. I’d describe the styles you can find here as comfortable fashion. Secondly, although not strictly a label, I’m enamoured with the designs of Ly Qui Khanh. His creations are exquisitely elegant, strikingly modern, yet wonderfully captivating. They exude extravagance without veering into ostentation. His designs embody the essence of fairytales and dreams.”

Cafes to go to for a good coffee fix

“Some of my favourite cafes include Bosgaurus on Nguyen Huu Canh, nestled in a villa with tranquil and picturesque surroundings; Rang Rang in Thao Dien, boasting ample space, featuring vintage arcade games, and serving excellent coffee, naturally; and Aramour in Thao Dien, offering a charming green ambiance with a local feel. And, naturally, all of them prioritise eco-friendliness.”

Her hidden gem for unwinding and relaxation

“For unwinding and relaxation, I adore visiting Bel Cafe on Pham Viet Chanh in Binh Thanh. It stands out as it’s never too crowded, offering ample space, and its drinks are wonderfully unique – such as the Pandan Latte and my top choice, the Snickerdoodle Cookie drink. It offers a wide array of delicious food and baked treats, and to add to that, it operates as a sustainable business.”

A must-visit spot to experience the city like a local

“You simply must visit the snails and seafood street in District 4 on Vinh Khanh Street, renowned for offering the finest seafood around. Don’t miss out on seeing Cau Ba Son (Saigon River Bridge) and the adjacent park, perfect for scenic views, photography, and soaking in the overall ambiance. And, naturally, indulge in some sidewalk coffee; my preferred spots include Tam Coffee & Tea on Hai Ba Trung and 3T Ca Phe Trung on Ngo Van Nam.”

Her favourite cultural hotspots

“There are always plenty of pop-ups, so be sure to keep an eye out for them. As for cultural attractions, Independence Palace is consistently impressive and tranquil to explore. Some excellent markets worth visiting include Cho Ben Thanh and Tan Dinh Market. And for a pleasant and enjoyable time, Nguyen Hue Walking Street is a classic choice, where you can find street food, street performers, and people simply out to enjoy themselves.”

Where to find unique artisanal crafts

“If you’re going to be picking up any artisanal crafts, definitely head to the markets I mentioned (Ben Thanh and Tan Dinh). These local markets are your best bet for any crafts you are looking for.”

Ultimate nightlife destination for partygoers

“A trip to Ho Chi Minh wouldn’t be complete without experiencing a Vietnamese beer garden, where Vina-House music blares and people have a fantastic time. There are several renowned ones, such as PocPoc and The Gangs. Expect plenty of drinks, lively music, dancing, and delicious grilled food.”

The most captivating scenic views

“The new Saigon River Bridge Park on Nguyen Thien Thanh near Cau Ba Son is absolutely stunning. If you visit at sunset, you’ll encounter a blend of lively activity, people capturing photographs, the silhouette of towering buildings, kites soaring nearby, and food vendors – it’s a truly magical and invigorating experience. The scenery is simply breathtaking. In a city as urbanised as Ho Chi Minh City, finding nature can be a challenge, but the Starlight Bridge in District 7 is a sanctuary I often seek out. There’s a delightful park and natural surroundings, and the bridge illuminates like a rainbow after dark.”
