Singapore’s bakery scene has been thriving, with famous global bakeries such as Cedric Grolet and the newly-opened Bakery 1946 setting up shop here. More home-grown artisan bakeries have been popping up as well, making Singapore a haven for cake and pastry lovers alike. However, while we’re all fascinated with these new arrivals, we have to admit that some of them are pretty pricy.

But fret not, in case you didn’t know, our hawkers have their own share of bakeries offering delicious treats that won’t break the bank. It’s time to take your next bakery run into the heartlands with these hawker-based gems.

Cat in the Hat

1/7

Located in Golden Mile Food Centre, Cat in the Hat is helmed by a mother-daughter duo and they pride themselves on their French-inspired bakes. Think – dainty financiers, decadent chocolate ganache tarts and refreshing lemon meringue tarts. They also sell buttery scones – you could quite literally make your own afternoon tea set at home! Their bakes are sold from as low as $1.50, and don’t worry, they don’t compromise on taste at all.

Opening Hours: Wednesdays to Sundays, from 10am to 1.30pm

Mr Baguette

2/7

If you’re looking for something more decadent and sinful at Golden Mile Food Centre, you can head on over to Mr Baguette. They serve up crispy baguette balls with molten lava centres, with flavours such as Adzuki, Hazelnut, and even Red Velvet and Tiramisu. If you’re planning to take them away to eat later or on the next day, make sure to heat them up in order to enjoy the full flavour profile. The best part is: they don’t skimp on the fillings at all. Though it might get a little messy eating them, it’s definitely worth it.

Opening Hours: Mondays to Fridays, from 12pm to 4.30pm, and weekends, from 12pm to 6pm

Butter Town

3/7

This sister duo is selling something that you most likely wouldn’t expect to see in a hawker bakery – shio pans. These unassuming, buttery, lightly salted breads are taking the world by storm, especially after Seoul’s Soha Salt Pond bakery went viral on social media. They have a wide selection of shio pans, including Original, as well as interesting flavours like Black Sesame Mochi and even Mushroom Cream. To make you even more spoilt for choice, Butter Town also offers sourdough cakes such as their Triple Chocolate Sourdough Cake and Gula Melaka Pistachio Pandan Sourdough Cake. From the looks of it, you might have to make at least two trips down to this bakery.

Opening Hours: Tuesdays to Saturdays, from 9.30am to 2pm

Butter Town is at 44 Holland Dr, #02-35, Singapore 270044

Mad Roaster

Our CBD girlies are probably not new to this bakery – some of you might have even joined the long queue during your busy lunch break. Not only does Mad Roaster sell a good cup of coffee to give you that much-needed caffeine boost in the middle of the day, but they are also famous for their Chocolate Babka and Cinnamon Brioche. These breads are the perfect sweet treats to go along with your coffee, or to bring back to the office for a little tea time snack.

Opening Hours: Mondays to Fridays, from 8am to 3pm, and Saturdays, from 9am to 3pm

If you’re greedy for more sweet treats, or if bread isn’t your top-pick at Amoy Street Food Centre, you can head over to Lian Hup Heng to take a look as well! The humble store has a small but delectable menu of bakes, and they are all priced at $3.80. Some of the bakes you can look forward to include their Orh Nee Tart, Lemon Meringue Tart, and for those with a sweet tooth, you can look forward to their Fudgy Brownie and Yoghurt Cranberry cake. Their bakes are offered only in takeaway boxes – a sign for you to share these delicious bakes with your colleagues or family.

The Headless Baker

6/7

If someone gifts you a box of their bakes, you probably wouldn’t expect that they are from a humble hawker-based bakery. The owners of The Headless Baker, a couple with experience working at a French patisserie in Melbourne, whip up an array of delectable and aesthetic bakes for anyone looking for a little treat after a meal at the hawker centre. Some of their signature bakes include their Flourless Chocolate Cake, Earl Grey Lavender Tea Cake and unique Plum Cardamom Tart. They also cater to all palates – the owners have cleverly tweaked their recipes to be less sweet, making them perfect for older residents in the area and anyone who enjoys a more balanced flavour profile.

Opening Hours: Wednesdays to Sundays, from 8am to 2pm

Butter and Cream

Another CBD favourite would be Butter and Cream, which sells simple old-school egg tarts and muffins, along with interesting creations such as doffins (a mix between a muffin and donut). They have a variety of muffins, ranging from Apple Crumble, Oreo, to Banana and even Marshmallow. Moreover, if you buy five of their muffins, you’ll get one for free. These would be perfect as a tea time snack for your kids, or at a gathering with your friends (though if you’d like, you could have them all to yourself!).
